Pot Limit Hold'em

I've been dabbling in some Pot Limit MTTs and SnGs lately and have come across a situation that I'm not sure how to handle.

When you are dealt a big hand UTG(+1) how do you play it? I'm talking about hands like AA/KK/QQ where you want to narrow down the competition and get lots of chips in pre-flop.

At the early stages of a tourny betting the pot does nothing. You will get 4-5 callers and your hand basically becomes garbage unless you hit a set. If you limp, the majority of times the pot does not get raised so again you're stuck with 4-5 callers.

Later on in tournys this isn't that bad since betting the pot actually means something compared to the 50 chips in the first level.

Any thoughts?

I've also been dabbling in PL Omaha (and have found that my gf is a much better player!) I find that people overplay hands with a big pair too often and this is their downfall. Realize that you have 4 cards, a total of 6 starting combinations. Thus your, As Ad 9c 3h give you horrid two-hand combos, except for the As. You truly need more than just the overpair out to make these hands work in many cases. A hand I did raise the other night (which didn't work out) was As Ah Ts Tc ... this I consider a superior starting hand because in addition to the AA, TT, I had a suited ace and the AT might even work out.

With AA, KK, and QQ, look for other options for hands. KKQJ will play much better (and is better suited to raising preflop) then KK94.

LMAO - ya think?

PL Hold'em ... ahhh ...

As, Ks, and Qs GOOD - 72o not so good. 72s depends on me mood Smile

I don't recommend trying the limp/reraise, unless you're certain someone will raise. Throw out the max raise (as scant as it is) and at least chase out the 64o hands. If you get the chance to reraise, you're at the point where the pot is large enough to have it play out like NL.

PS

And you've seen me play ... you KNOW I get confused often Smile

tough there skribbles ... of course situations like this make me hate PL and Limit poker ... play it safe, raise it to chase at least a few out of the pot, and be ready to lay it down to any resistance ... i hate getting big hands in the first few rounds of any tourney, limit or no limit cause usually nobody is willing to risk their stack that early (rightly so)

Early position with a big pair, I prefer to open with a pot-sized raise, and hope someone re-raises so I can isolate. if the flop is favorable, I'll go ahead and bet the pot again. If there were a lot of callers, this should be a sizable amount, and if there are only a few callers, you have your best odds to win. I'd say the "standard" opening raise is usually between 2-4x the BB, but raising pot is often a viable move with a hand as good as TT, JJ, QQ, AK, KK, or especially AA.

If you get those 4-5 callers to your pre-flop open, betting the pot on the flop will usually thin a field a little more.
