Would you have called?

A couple weeks ago I was playing in a WPT qualifier at Foxwoods, $60 buy in, 10 plyaers and you need to finish top 2 to get to the $220 buy in.

Blinds are $25/$50 still early, everybody folds preflop, I'm the SB, I call with a 6 3 off suit. BB checks, flop comes 9 6 3, don't remember the suits, but nothing close to a flush draw. I decide to slow play and check, he checks. Turn comes K, still no flucj draw. He bets $600, I come over the top and put him all in. He has about $3000 in chips, I have $3200. I figure he has a K, but I have a strong feeling he does not have 2 pair. He calls me with a K 5 off suit, so now he has K 9 6 5 3 no flush draw against my 2 pair. He draws a 5 on the river and beats me.

Everybody I talked to said they would have figured me for 2 pair and would have folded that hand. What do you think?

I think he called you with top pair/weak kicker and got lucky. Not being a smarty pants, just callin 'em like I see 'em. Wink

In all actuality, I would have folded to your all-in move...I wouldn't have been able to fold fast enough!

No, I agree, he got lucky. That's what has been eating me up. First I thought I made the wrong move, but hindsight tells me I made the right move as far as strategy goes. I just can't believe he called me with K K 9 6 5.

These are the types of guys I love to play against in cash games, and loathe during tourneys.

Good point.

Flop check is bad.

Turn check is worse.

Poker happens.

I want to make something very clear here-- on the flop, there are 3 cards in the deck that totally, 100% decimate your hand. And many more than scare you.

On the turn, there are 6 that do such a thing.

That's why I hate the checks.

I guess you got him in as a 4:1 dog though, so it can't be that bad. Sorry for sounding harsh, but bottom 2 pair is not the type of thing you slowplay.

You need to bet the flop there - Bottom 2 pair is a hand that needs to be protected - Especially a hand like 36.

This weekend I raised the BB to 20 from 10 with 36os. He called - Flop came J36. We got all in on the flop. He had J6. Doh! Cost me $1k, but I would make the same play next time also.

You're not being harsh at all, that's why I am looking for other people's opinions.
What I really wanted people to do is out themselves in his shoes, not mine. If I put myself in his shoes and I have his hand, KK965 after the turn and I was just check-raised all-in, I have to seriously consider folding. Would you put your tourney on the line and call with his hand?

To answer your original question, and only comment his call: I personally would not have called. If I freeride with K5 from the BB into a pot, I see no reason betting 6x the pot into an unraised pot on the turn if I spike my K either.
