lets say you're in first position... you check... everyone else checks... if you can't make anything on the next card, do you fold, or check again?
i know it doesn't hurt your cards to check... but there's an image to think about as well i would think. i'm wondering if by checking the second time, you're basically saying "i have nothing".
now... i realize that this works to your advantage if you actually DO have something because you may be able to pull a check raise... but i'm asking about situations where you really DONT have a hand.
do you check the second time and see if the others do the same again, or do you just fold?

well depends on the number of people in the hand. if theres only like 2-3 players maybe you can take a crack at the pot. if someone calls most likely ur beat. but if there is a big number of people in the part like 4-7 players then of course you have to check. maybe someone is slowing playing trips or something. and of course if a small number of people you must know your opponents.

I have to agree with most all of what alpha said. Online low limit (I don't know why I have this feeling about this game) but it is possible to do it to bet out with nothing with two people behind you. If they call, you have to put them on a pair. Casino low limit though you have a good chance of people probably calling you. Of course, you must know your opponents.
Nice meeting you tonight too, JKeats.

if i make a decent hand on the turn like top or second pair and everyone has checked the flop then its checked to a late position who makes a bet come over the top of him if you have low pair or something and no good draws you should probably just let him have it

in 1st position, with nothing, PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN!!!! dont risk your chips in the worst position with no cards. It is a losing play. You have too many players to go through. The up side is that when you do have something, an checkraise is in order, and will probably be called, depending on the texture of your game.

Interesting...missed this thread before...
I have been trying this tactic (only in NLHE) a bit that I picked up from Phil Helmuths book...
Lets say I am in early position ( Big or Little blind or UTG) and the flop comes with say A J 3 rainbow. ( I have J9suited) and there were no preflop raises...all limpers.
Normally I check this hand and see what happens....
but after reading Phil Helmuths book...I make a bet to find out how strong my hand is...this is probably the best nugget of information that I have taken from Phil's book...
Betting to find out the strength of your hand...
I bet twice the big blind if I pair the board...
I bet the big blind if I don't pair the board but have a draw or over cards
Now what I have discovered is this...
I am winning more pots with probably 2nd or 3rd best hands...and I am not risking many chips...
Worse case scenario is someone raises over the top because they either don't put me on an ace, they hit two pair, or they limped in with a small pocket pair.
I have tried this tactic when I have limped in from the big blind with crap and stolen a few pots...
The other value of this play I have found is that I can sometimes get a free card on the river...by checking the turn...especially if it is another low card...
Anyway my two cents on this type of play...

The kicker for the above is "if you have the chips to spend" . . . grimes, you descirbe how I like to play when I have a good stack . . . but I might be more conservative if I don't have so many chips, or it was early in a tournament.

I have to agree with grimes that perhaps an info bet is in order. If you bet out perhaps just the minimum bet, you will get a feel for the hands that the players behind you have. If you just get a call, they probably have paired on the board but don't have top pair. If they re-raise you then you can fold and have put a minimal amount of chips in the pot. You never know, I've had people fold to a minimum bet and I've taken the pot with nothing better than a K high card. The key is to know your opponents.
However, if you have some extremely loose players (aka no foldems) at your table then you should probably check. This will keep you from adding to the pot and may give you a free turn card.
Just my opinion of course, but like almost all of the replies have stated, it depends on your opponents and how well you know them.

Here's a concept to contemplate...
Call me crazy but when you have no hand...you can just not play the cards. That means that it's perfectly alright to let someone else steal the pot...it also gives you a little more leverage when you have better position to try it. I actually HAVE stolen blinds in a super-super tight game from under the gun...but it's not a practice you can live off of.
