I was thinking that it might be a sweet idea for us to get a Ventrilo server. That way, instead of using a chatroom, we could actually talk voice-to-voice. It might be easier to get games together with forum members and would certainly make it easier to trash talk during forum tournament events. :D What do you guys think? I could get things off of the ground and organize this, but I just want to see how much interest you all have in this idea before I go forward with it. It's only $12/mo for 25 users and we could all contribute to the cost.
25 users means 25 users on the server at one time. We could have any number of people with logins to the server from this forum, but it would max out at 25. Like I said, I don't know how much interest everyone would have in this idea, so 25 may be a number that is too large or too small, but you can pay for less or more users.
What do you think? We could try it out for a month and see how everyone likes it.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

The problem is that 25 people on at once would become a complete mess with everyone talking at once
Posted Sun Aug 14, 2005 5:49 pm GMT by Ben4040
You can have multiple channels to avoid something like that. We could have different discussion channels and channels set aside for specific poker rooms... so those playing on PartyPoker can be on their own channel and those playing on PokerStars, etc. could be in other channels. And you can have subchannels. That way you don't have that many people trying to talk at once. I wouldn't worry about that too much anyway, I've been on Ventrilo servers before with 10+ people in a single channel and actually it isn't too bad surprisingly.

Yeah I've also been on voice chat rooms with lots of people and it generally works well, people just have to be courteous when other are talking, the one I was on also had a text option, so if there was something you really wanted to say while someone else was talking you could just type it in.
Posted Sun Aug 14, 2005 9:20 pm GMT by Ben4040
Yeah it has that feature too, you can use a chatroom as well.
Posted Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:53 pm GMT by Ben4040
Well, I actually went ahead and just created the Ventrilo server because I figured we would be able to use it and, if not, I might have some uses for it in the future. But I signed up for 1 month and 10 users just so we can try it out and see how much use we get out of it. The server information is:
VENTRILO HOST: bliss.typefrag.com
VENTRILO PORT: 11799
Download the Ventrilo application at: www.ventrilo.com
It will be nice to get a chance to actually talk to the people we have been posting with on this forum. Could a forum admin make this information post sticky?

Great idea by the way.

Thanks Geno. I saw you were on earlier Imajica1975, I was just at work so I couldn't log on. I will probably be playing some tonight.

Ben, 3 people came in named nipple, ae and kal to play counterstrike. They used one of our other chat rooms. Do you know who they are? Is there a way to get them banned off it?
Posted Sun Aug 21, 2005 2:39 am GMT by Ben4040
I was afraid something like this would happen. I will either have to password the server or create usernames. Either way, I was thinking it would be best to get the password to maybe forum members with a certain number of posts on the forum in order to ensure we know who they are.
Posted Sun Aug 21, 2005 3:05 am GMT by Ben4040
Alright, I now made the Ventrilo server authenicate users before allowing them to connect. If you want access please PM and I can give you a username and password. With unique usernames and passwords it will allow us to know exactly who is who on the server and we won't have random people abusing the use.
I was hoping we could get away with just having an open server, but I kind of suspected this would happen. We can still use the server just as we would in the first place, but now it will just be more of a pain to set up usernames for everyone, but once they are established we will be in good shape.
Posted Sun Aug 21, 2005 7:09 am GMT by crack
How active are you on this site, Ben? You may be best coming into IRC and just authing us all, because we are usually getting the chats together.
I will PM you a list of names of the people that have been using it so far and you could perhaps send them PM's with the relevant info. It will just speed the process up.
Posted Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:49 am GMT by Ben4040
Thanks crack. I was going to make the Ventrilo usernames match the forum usernames just for consistency and so we know exactly who everyone is.
Posted Sun Aug 21, 2005 10:47 am GMT by crack
I prefer to be called Craig if i am honest. I think what we could do is add the comment with our real names in.
Posted Mon Aug 22, 2005 10:25 am GMT by bluef0x
Ben- it says im banned from ventrilo... im assuming this is because i left for 2 days and left on my computer (with vent running) lol... sorry about that- could you unban me?

My offical judgement on this....
This is good and I demand you all start using it. PM BEN FOR A USERNAME AND PASSWORD!

Ben,
I sent a request for a password through the PM system, but it seems to have got lost in transit
Can you sort me out,
Thx
(PM me)
Posted Wed Aug 31, 2005 7:52 pm GMT by Ben4040
Yeah, I have been sending out some PMs with username and password information but apparently some of them are not going through. Someone suggested they might not actually send if you PM inbox is full. Adam, I will try sending your information again now. Check your PM inbox in a few minutes.

The Ventrilo server will expire on September 14. I think those that use it are in agreement that this is definitely something we would like to keep. If you already have a Ventrilo username and think the Ventrilo server is something you will definitely want to continue to use, please send $1-2 via PayPal to sales@hvostal.com. We should have enough to renew the server for 15 users for another two months with about $18 collected.
Also, if you have requested a username and password through PM but did not receive a PM back from me with your login information, please contact me on AOL Instant Messenger... my screenname is Ben4040 and I am nearly always online (I am not necessarily always at my computer, but in any case you can leave me a message and I will get back to you). For some reason some of my PMs with the user login information are not going through. I have sent people information by PM only to find out days later that they never received the PM for some reason. If you are one of those people, I just wanted to let you know that I am not ignoring you... I did try to PM you your information, but for some reason it just didn't transmit. Just contact me on AOL IM and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks!

paypal is teh suck. 33 cents of that dollar will disappear. neteller? any other options?
Posted Thu Sep 08, 2005 1:15 pm GMT by crack
Neteller also takes a fee. I don't mind paying the full $18 for this month. I can just send that to your paypal address and whatever fee is charged you could make up the differemce?
Posted Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:48 pm GMT by Ben4040
I didn't even realize there was a fee associated. That's the first time I have seen this. Yeah I guess we can just take turns paying by the month. It is $9/mo for 15 users. That sounds good crack if you want to do that that would be fine. We can rotate paying the $9. I mentioned $18 before only at the possibility of getting it for two months not one, but we can just pay monthly.
Posted Thu Sep 08, 2005 3:10 pm GMT by crack
For everyone that uses the vent servers I am pretty sure that to most of us the $9 a month isn't going to break the bank. I would much prefer to do it this way too than to keep having to remember to pay a few dollars each month. I will send you over the $9 tonight.

I'm new here, but I'd love to hop in and play with you guys sometime. I'll send Ben a PM.

If you are around still then you can also send a pm to me. I can set you up a vent account too.

Is anyone interested in picking up the cost of the Ventrilo server for the month of October? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I would have, but as you may have been able to tell it is blocked at my university.

i just happened across this old thread, wondering what became of this. was it used, etc.. basicly is the concept of voice chat something we would like to see reintroduced for thp?
tucked away on my personal todo list, on unrealted works, is the provision of voice chat. one of these days i'll be setting up a voice server to get familiar with the administration of it, then releasing it public on that work. if a second server for thp voice would be put to use, i'ld have no problem doing so. but if it wouldnt be put to use, i wouldnt waste the resources.
i wont be using vent services for mine, i'll be using teamspeak. for someting like this, no teamspeak licensing is required (for up to 100 concurrent users if i recall, and if >100, the last concern is licensing).
Posted Thu May 25, 2006 5:07 pm GMT by crack
Yeah we all enjoyed it. Don't know what happened when I went away. We are back using it now. Well teamspeak. I dunno the details, they are on irc. Everyones voice sounds tinny and shit, but I don't know what settings to use. I tried everything on best quality.
Posted Thu May 25, 2006 7:05 pm GMT by JackKingOff
i had ventrilo a while back for mad wc3 but i became less competetive in that and then found my true love... POKR!
Posted Fri May 26, 2006 9:51 am GMT by Ben4040
Yeah we definitely all liked and used it. We no longer have it though
Posted Fri May 26, 2006 10:03 am GMT by JohnnyCache
I was barely starting to use it when it kind of petered out, but yeah, I liked having people to talk to while I played online. It was more like playing live. . .
Posted Fri May 26, 2006 10:24 am GMT by zinn0
At the present time, we've begun using TS2 (teamspeak 2).
Don't ask, just thank Supa.
Posted Fri May 26, 2006 6:15 pm GMT by supafrey
Eat my shit. You guys were the hackers.
Yeah. If anyone comes on our irc channel at any time, there's always atleast a dozen ppl there. Getting on to teamspeak is a breeze from there.
Posted Fri Jul 21, 2006 7:31 pm GMT by vyni
Simply posting this to all related threads:
THP now has its own chat server to be dedicated to the community (irc.texasholdem-poker.com), and moments ago, we launched a teamspeak server for voice chats.
First thing in the coming week, we'll begin to promote the chat features to the community, add a browser based java chat applet for users that do not have (or simply cannot figure out) chat clients, and add extensive help pages for these new chat features.
In the meantime, you can find easy linkage to these chats in the "who's online" section of the forum index (found at borrom of page) on texasholdem-poker.com. These stats and links will be released on thpblog as well later.
