I figured out why I play JX suited!!!

Posted Tue Aug 16, 2005 12:31 am GMT by 1988 TR
It's because of all the people that like to slow play Aces!!! Laughing

I don't know about you guys, but I am VERY careful with aces. I know it's a hand I will have an extremely hard time getting away from.... I make sure I get my money in fast.

Just had this hand where I limped in on the SB with J4s. BB raised to 30 & I called.....

I have to quote from Harrington's book again.... He has a really good way of putting things. Here is how he defines 3 playing styles :

1) The conservative player wants to enter just a few pots. When he does play, he wants to either a hand that rates to be the best, or one that's being offered great odds to play. He's trying to minimize the number of difficult decisions he will face after the flop.

2) The agressive player is willing to play more hands with somewhat weaker cards. He wants to see more flop than the conservative player, and he's confident in his ability to read the table and extricate himself from second-best hands.

3) The super-aggressive player will enter a lot of pots, perhaps as many as 30 percent. He's looking to steal some pots or see some flops cheaply. He's counting on his skill to enable him to let go cheaply of a hand that's beaten, while collecting huge pots on either his legitimately strong hands, or his random hands that hit great flops.

At a 6 person table, I will fall somewhere between 2&3. I played in a 65 person, $100 tournament over the weekend & have a very different style. Way tighter, in order to survive the tourney.

I think the key to this pot was that I knew on the flop I may be beat (or he may be continuing a bet with 1010, AK, AQ, etc). So instead of raising, I still call in order to see how the turn betting goes. I don't feel like I have enough information to know if I am beat or not. Once I hit the turn, I am pretty confident that I am winning. With the pre flop raise, I only really have to fear JJ, 88, or 77, but given the solid flop on the beat, trips don't make sense to me. I am very confident I have the lead on the turn & that's when I get my chips in.

Plum later said he had JJ. I am not sure I believe him. I slowed it down on the re-raise on the flop & wanted to see a turn. The Q had me fearing 9 10, so I only called. By the time the awful river came, it was an easy lay down.

Of course, some hands are tough to read... I felt like this hand, the opponent had a top pair with a high club. The betting was kind of strange due to the hands we were holding. Ballsy bet on the river by him - I was ready to check it down. I like to get my chips in the pot if I'm pretty sure I am winning - My bet on the turn here was to try & slow him down & then use my position to check the river. I think if I didn't re-raise the turn, I have an all in decision on the river....

I see how it works...J6 suited is a losing hand, but J4 suited...that's where the money is at! LOL.

Nice pot. I'm definitely not ready for the 5/10 table.

heh

I've been meaning to talk to you about the 5/10 hand you posted. IIRC, the flop came 774 and you bet & the BB called. At this point you really need to put him on a 7 or a 4. Did you think he was bluff calling you?? Once the turn comes a 4, you need to check & fold to any kind of bet. It was an unraised pot.... the BB isn't going to be calling with nothing for just the BB he has in the pot.

Well, I did acknowledge it was the worst played hand ever for me. I totally forgot he was on the BB and so I didn't think until it was over...oh, 7,2...that makes sense...just really wasn't using my head at all on that hand.
