Best poker books?

Posted Tue Aug 16, 2005 7:49 am GMT by nixon
I've been playing Hold em for a little more than 2 years, and I've never read any of the books written by the pros. I play in a tavern circuit which has no buy-ins, just prizes, which I seem to hold my own pretty well. I finished 3rd in the 160 player regional championship last season. My 2 recent casino experiences, both WPT qualifiers have not faired well, which is making me think I should get some advice from the Pros. I am looking for a book mostly on tournament play, I'm not much into cash games, and need some advice from anybody who has read some of the books out there. Barnes and Nobel has so many choices, I just need a couple good places to start.

Good tournament book:
Harrington on Hold 'em. Vol 1

Second piece of advice: get lots of real money tourney experience, even if it’s at low stakes.

There is a literature section in the forum that has lots of good stuff about different poker books you can get.

A second vote for Harrington. Great stuff.

For tournament Hold'em, I also recommend Harrington, both Volume 1 & 2.

For Hold'em cash games I recommend Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth.

For general Poker, I recommend The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.

For tournaments...

of course Harrington's Books... by far I think they are the best. Followed closely by....

No Limit Chamionship Hold 'Em by T.J. Cloutier

Championship Satellite Strategy aka How to Turn a Toothpick into a Lumberyard by Tom McEvoy and Brad Daugherty

You'll find that the styles do differ between all 3 players....

I think the best thing to do while reading them is to read them and try to apply and learn from what works best for yourself. You'll really see yourself change and grow as a player. I'm not through with the first volume of Harrington and I'm still winning more tournaments. Turning the toothpick into a Lumberyard!

Take everyone's advice....Harrington on hold'em vol 1 and 2 are excellent books. I really think that everyone would seriously learn some quality poker theory and strategies after reading and rereading(of course) these books.
I've read both of them twice and I still find bits and pieces of stuff in them. If your serious about tournament hold em, them these books are a must for you.

Yea if nixon hadn’t specified that he was mainly a tournament player I would have recommended this one (my first poker book).

As has already mentioned by others, it’s a very good all round book. It also complement Harrington well because Harrington works mainly with examples where as Sklansky does a lot of maths and theory.

Is theory of poker good for NL cash game players ?? or is the advanced one better ?

Usually play 0.10/0.25 NL cash.

I read Super System 2 and It helped me out a lot I think.

Another vote for Harrington! Wink

But I'm not sure about Super System 2... Did it really help you? What about Super System 1?

wow not seen this thread for ages...

i have now just finished harrington vol1... and have started reading it again..
as soon as i have finished it i am going to buy the second one.

he has taught me so much...

one example... i kinda understood about pot odds.. but i could never put them into action in a real game.
but the way harrington explains things with the example hands just makes everything fit in to place in my head.

can not recommend enough.

I agree with Harrington.

Sklansky clearly knows his stuff, but is very dry. If you're mathematically oriented, go there.

Avoid Hellmuth. Seems to be mostly stories and not much strategy, to me anyway.

Disappointingly, I couldn't find any of Fillmaff's books on amazon.com. I guess I'm not surprised, they probably sold out as soon as they were shipped.

filmaff should write a book.

it would definately be the best one available

is there any tournament books that lean more towards the aggressive side of the game?

I'm moving this to the book forum.

Hold'em poker for advanced players is VERY dry and very limit oriented but has good info.

Yes, that's it. Harrington is not as dry as Sklansky. Sklansky helped me to understand what odds are, Harrington showed how to use it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm about halfway through Harrington's first book, the second is being delivered today. The challenge I am facing is finding:Championship Satellite Strategy: How to Turn a Toothpick into a Lumberyard. I originally ordered this from Borders / Amazon, and they cancelled the order after about 3 weeks as they cannot obtain this book from their suppliers. Same thing with Barnes and Noble. They didn't have new copies, but had a place to order the book from authorized resellers. I found one copy for about $23. Placed the order, now that order is cancelled as well by the seller. They have 3 authorized resellers through B&N, but the prices are outrageous. $131.25 or $157.50

Anybody know where to get this book without being raped?

If you're still looking for this book, there's a seller on ebay with about 100 copies for $19.95 each.

Wow. I didn't realize Harrington's books were so highly respected until browsing through here a bit. I've gone through a few others and am reading Theory of Poker now, but I think I know what my next choice will be.
