A couple Limit questions

Posted Fri Aug 19, 2005 8:05 pm GMT by Skribbles
I prefer to play $2/4 but if the bankroll is low I go to $1/2

1) Do you cap pre-flop with AA? Situation: You raise in early position, a player in late position 3-bets. Blinds fold and you are heads up with him. Do you cap or just call for a little deception?

2) You're in SB with AQo. There are 2 limpers. Do you raise or just take a flop and see if you hit?

3) When you first get to a table, do you think its a good idea to splash some chips around? If you miss the first couple hands you play, could it be to your benefit to call down with a couple hands that are sure losers?
I was playing 2 tables the other night at Party ($2/4). The first table I stayed tight and the first couple hands I played I showed down winners. After that all my bets and raises got respect. When I'd hit a good hand, it would be very tough to get any action. On the other table I called down with a couple awful hands... why? I don't know. But after that I got ALOT of action anytime I played a hand. I got paid off on alot of big hands by guys calling down with 2nd pair or worse.
In the end I was up $84 on the table were I showed off bad hands to start. On the table where I had a good image I was up $15. This was in about an hour and a half of play.
So would it almost be better to have a loose image?

1. Yeah I'm almost always willing to cap with AA. Over time, you will win more money with that starting hand than any other. Chances are, they have a pretty big hand anyway, and you won't gain all that much by just calling--cold calling three bets is essentially the same as capping, and capping may indicate a wider variety of hands (the only hand I might cold call 3 bets with is something like AKs).

2. I would often limp in with the intention of check-raising on the flop if I hit it well.

3. Really depends. There are two theories: either have a reputation as very tight (easier to bluff), or very wild (easier to get action when you got big hands). I like to change it up from time to time, especially when I've played with one or more players on that table before. It also depends on how much money you have... personally, I find it just as easy to play it straight and grind out some decent cash. Maybe I don't win as much as quickly, but usually I have something else to occupy me in the meantime.

1) yes, always

2) raise, always

3) I prefer to be very tight and only show down winners early. if you do splash, just remember that you cannot bluff later

1) I rarely cap it HU. Three or more in the pot with you, always cap. The fact that they put a third bet in on their terms is an indication that they have either a big ace or high pocket pair, both of which I have dominated. I'm not terribly concerned with getting one small bet now it's more important that they think their AQ may be good unimproved. When you cap it preflop it's usually an indication that you're not folding, capping it preflop usually kills your postflop action. If the flop is rags I want my oppoent to think he can steal it.

2) This is a tough one. Depends upon where the limpers are and how tight they are. Vs a couple of tight players limping from EP AQo might not be that great. If you're up against a few stations looking for a cheap flop your AQo is good the vast majority of the time.

3) Depends on how you intent to play. It's clearly an advantage to have an image that is the opposite of how you play. Perhaps you should let your image dictate how you play.

Very player dependent. Against a better player, I'm much more inclined to smoothcall, and plan on often putting the first raise in on the turn. Against somebody who will tend to call down anyway, and isn't paying much attention, capping tends to be best. You tend to get a lot more money out of somebody who has an overpair or flops top pair when you don't cap, but you are obviously giving up some value. That said, I will *almost* ONLY do this heads up. If it's more than heads up, ram and jam every time baby.

Raise, almost every time.

I'm always splashing chips around, so of course I think it's a good idea ;P
