Should I have folded?

Posted Wed Aug 24, 2005 6:01 pm GMT by kiFF_aKa
I was dealt Ace Queen unsuited. I bet, and many folded. Someone raised, and I re-raised. After this, only 3 players were left. The flop was 9 Q 9. I bet. One player folded, and the last player left raised. I called thinking top two pair with ace kicker was very decent. The turn was a 10 and the River was a 2. I bet, he raised, I re-raised, he went all in, I called.....he had a set...I lost. What should I have done?? Confused

You need to give ALOT more info then just he bet, I raised, he re-raised...

Was this FL or NL? What were the bets? Was this tourny or cash? What was the chip count? Who had position?

I'm too nooby to give that much detail lol. I forgot to mention this was online. It was tourny. Since I can't give you all that info, can you tell me what I should have done in different scenarios please?

There are thousands of different scenarios....

Answer these questions:

Since it was a tournement, chip count is EXTREMELY important. If you don't remember exactly, give the best estimation possible.

What was the buy-in? $5, $10, $100... Freeroll? Play Money?

What were the blinds at?

Where were you pre-flop? Button, Small Blind, Big Blind or somewhere in the middle?

How much did you bet pre-flop? How much did he raise you? How much did you re-raise?

How much did you bet on the flop? The size of the pot? Half the pot? Minimum bet? How much did he raise you?

You didn't mention any betting on the turn, did you both check?

And finally, what site do you play on? On every poker site you can request a hand history which you can simply copy and paste onto the forum to make things much easier.

Without this info there is no answer to your question.

General advice:

Looks like there was a lot of action pre-flop which suggests that you might be in trouble if your cards don't hit on the flop since you have an unpaired hand.

The flop is dangerous so you need to raise the final player's bet (by quite a bit) to see if he really does have that third 9. If he raises back at you it's time to fold and give him the benefit of the doubt. If he calls, he is first to act after the turn and you should probably fold to a bet (provided it is not too small that you have to call it) but if he checks you have two options. Either consider another bet in case he was chasing a hand on that flop and missed it on the turn (he would probably fold if you bet enough) or just check and see how he plays the river. If you choose to bet and he raises, it is again probably time to fold.

It's too hard to give any good advice without more specifics but that's a start.
