Chips + cards

k im in the market for poker schwag, i dont have room for a table so the dining room table will suffice for now. need a chips set though so i dont have to use this $20 plastic set.

anyways im wondering if i should build a set piece by piece picking all the best stuff. or i can buy a cheap set and ugrade piece by piece if i find out i care enough.

i dont think i will ever play with more than 10 people, and if i do, id need a whole new set anyways so im thinking 500 piece set is the right amount

also chip selection what types are there and what do i want? are "composite clay" and "metal insert" the same type. i just dont want that annoying clang sound that some of you complain about, but wether or not its "real" clay i dont care unless theres a good reason too.

now, ebay. is it possible to get a nice chip set for under $100 liek the ones that flood ebay? or are those junk in every way. what features should i look for?

thank you for anyone who can answer one/all of my questions!

I started at poker about a year ago and I've gone through upgrading my set as I went. I started on 7.5 gram composite chips, moved on to the token 11.5 gram dice chips, today I'm playing with 10g Nevada Jacks chips custom printed with my own logo.

To start off with it really doesn't matter which chips you go for, any of the composite chips are fine provided they aren't solid plastic. I'd probably try to find something a little different to the dice chips to make it that little bit more difficult for smugglers.

One thing I will say is you want a decent deck of cards. Your standard cardboard coated in plastic will be destroyed after about two hours play. I swear by 'Dal Negro - Torcello Poker' cards. This Italian brand are 100% plastic and a dream to handle, they glide and riffle excellently. I use a deck three times a week for upwards of two months without visible wear.

It seems to me that there are four price points for poker chips, the really cheapos, the 11.5g 'clay composite'/metal inserts, the NexGens, and the custom chips that run $1/apiece. I've been through the first three levels now and won't go to the final one until I win the WPT, so never.

I really, really like chips that have a recessed center for a 1" label. Even if you don't put on labels right away there is nothing like a personalized label to really make your chips special. The ones I know of are the NexGen River Poker Tour and NexGen Las Vegas chips, the 11.5 g Texas Hold'em chips, and the 13 g Casino chips. While I absolutely love the weight and feel of the 13 g Casino chips they have a dashed line around the edge of the center label depression that will never be completely covered up by a 1" label and will highlight any off-centered application of a label, and they'll all be off centered a little.

It's sometimes hard to spot these chips on an eBay search, though using "NexGen" as a search term and including searching title and description will find you the two NexGen styles. The Texas Hold'em term is used so pervasively that using it as a search term won't do you any good.

If you are interested in anything except an 11.5g composite I encourage you to go to 5 Star Deal (also a big eBayer) or PokerChipShopping.com (two arms of the same company). Their prices are pretty good for the better quality chips, especially if you factor in shipping. And, this is really important for me, you can customize your color mix.

There are lots of posts about chip selection in this forum. You may want to just scroll (instead of search) the archives and see what has been posted.

Good luck.

okay basically, i think im going for a set of 500 11.5 g or 13.5g clay chips.

anyways how do the WPT official plastic cards hold up? they are included with many chip sets on ebay.

i think im going to decide to narrow it down to clay chips because its a very easy way to make sure im getting higher quality chips with only a small difference in price.

http://cgi.ebay.com/500-POKER-CLAY-CHIP-SET-13-5g-LV-ROYAL-FLUSH-CASE-BTN_W0QQitemZ6204437019QQcategoryZ63759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

this looks like a good set although they are not clay. man its so hard to choose in the sub $100 range because there are soo many and they probably all as bad quality as the next.

at this point im considering buying the absolute cheapest set i can find that has plastic cards, and just upgrading piece by piece as i progress.

With plastic cards id say go with either Copag cards or Modianos. They both are real nice cards that you can use for years.Heres a link-http://caragails.com/index.htm-they sell both brands and have free shipping Wink

I really recommend that you don't choose your chips because of cards that come with them or vice-versa. If you have preferences for both then get the independently. It is very unlikely that you'll find the combination you want together.

IMHO there is nothing at all wrong with plain old Bee casino quality poker cards. In fact, I've purchased COPAGs and another all-plastic brand and didn't like them. They curled (not bent, curled) and smelled. The Bee cards shuffle nicely, have the heft to carry a couple of feet in a long-reach deal, and are inexpensive enough to throw away or give to the kids when they do get worn. We use a lot of the used casino Bee cards for family games but for home games with guests I keep a supply of new Bee poker decks on hand. Sure, they'll bend if abused and my daughter puts a permanent bend in a deck from the way she shuffles (so she gets the used casino cards). I'm retired military and can get them for $1.86/deck at the PX.

Most cards advertisec on eBay as "clay" AREN'T. If they're 11.5g they are a plastic over a metal insert. Period. Not to say they aren't OK. I've used them, given several sets as gifts, and have no problem with them. But they aren't clay. The 'real' ceramic style chips are going to cost you a buck apiece.

One final piece of advice. If you go on pokerchipshopping.com (I don't work for them, but have ordered a LOT of stuff from them) you can get sample packs of both a variety of chips and of specific chip styles. There is nothing like having your hands on the chips you are considering to help decide. And to repeat what I posted earlier, I really recommend a pack where you can customize your chip color quantities.

Good luck.

If you're considering Nexgens, you might want to go check out http://www.personalpokerchips.com/index.cfm/NEXGEN_POKER_SALE for some pretty nice prices right now.

Insofar as the pokerchipshopping.com site that lwestatbus mentions, it offers the same products as the 5stardeal site, both sites are operated by the same parent company, Trademark Services. You should find the same prices at both. When lwestatbus and I got our RPT chips, 5star and pokerchipshopping had a listing that netted out the chips at about 13¢ per chip if purchased in 200 chip sets; they don't have that available anymore.

While lwestatbus still has exchange privileges, if you don't, Costco also offers Bicycle cards (also from USPC) for about $13 and change for a 12 pack, if you're interested in paper cards (Sam's may have them as well, but we don't have any nearby.) I use both paper and plastic (sounds like the supermarket Laughing ), I'll use paper if there's the probability that someone at the table may damage the cards in shuffling (it's amazing to find how many people can't shuffle a deck of cards), and plastic if not. With paper cards, you do have the luxury of disposing of them after each game, and if someone has a spill accident, you just have to replace the deck rather than having to wash and dry the deck. Not a bad tradeoff at about $1.12 for a deck of Bicycles.

For cards, a few have mentioned Copags (good cards), someone said Modianos (no personal exp. with them)... I'd also say consider Dal Negros. Copags were my card of choice until I got my Dal Negros.
