  • Estimate (my own preference)
  • Use a calculator
  • Use an application that plugs into your poker client (violates some T&Cs).

The 2/4 rule is a good estimator (for 10 or less outs). After 10, it's a little less accurate and a fudge factor is needed.

How it works: Count the number of outs you have on the flop. Your approximate percentage for hitting the hand with one of those outs is 4 X (number of outs)% by the river. If you're figure outs and percentages on the turn, the multiplier is 2 X.

Example:

Have flopped bottom two pair - think I'm facing a str8. This gives me 4 outs. I'll hit my boat 16% (approx) of the time by the river. Same situation on the turn, approximately 8% of the time.

so that means if i have one card to get a straight after the flop, on the turn the prob. of getting it is 16% but on the river it would be 8%?

by the way how accurate is this?

Not exactly. You would have a 16% chance to hit it on either the turn or the river. Once you're down to just the river you only have an 8% chance.
