$75 multi-table tourney final table... 2 hands... |

Just looking for ideas on whether there was really any other way to play these two hands that took me from top 3 with 9 players remaining (payout was for top 9) to finishing 6th place. (I won $400, but really felt I had played well enough for top 3. I say top 3 because it is almost a crap shoot at that point unless you are dominating in chips.)
Anyway, hand 1:

hand 1: played fine, only thing could have changed is either reraised pf or raising the flop more.
hand 2: belongs in the bad beat section

funny thing about hand 2 is that I earlier had AJ and had raised pre-flop to about 3K. When this other guy goes all-in for 13K (which was about half my chip stack), I had made the wise decision and folded. He showed AA (which of course made me feel that much better.) So, it really pained me to see someone else make that poor decision and get rewarded for it. Frustrating, but what can you do? Next 4 times it happens, I will be thanking him for his crappy play.

What's wrong with that? He checked the turn hoping to induce a bet from his opponent on the river. Once the river paired the board, he no longer had the nuts. You're only gonna get called, or worse, re-raised by a hand that beats you. A check here is fine.

I think you can throw a bet out there - A high club would likely call. $3k would be a good bet.

Sure a high club may call, but what would you do if your opponent suddenly woke up and came over the top all in? Since we know what ScrewThePooch had, it's easy to say "I'd call and win with my Ace high flush".
But let's pretend for discussion that ScrewThePooch doesn't have AJ. He/she called your preflop raise, then led out and bet on the flop. Turn brings a 4th club and you both check. River pairs the board, ScrewThePooch checks and you decide to bet 3k. Now ScrewThePooch goes all-in. What do you do? Are you confident your nut flush is still good?

I disagree - trips will pay off flushes nicely.

I lay it down (maybe).
But 3k with their balances, isn't going to kill you.
They are in the hand heads up at a short handed table I can't play everyhand fearing the worst.
There are more hands that will make a losing call than there are boat possibilites.
I can see just about any club calling, a 10, or even the AJ pooch had.
If he bet 3k on the river, the pot is 22,500. There are a ton of hands worth a 3k call with 7.5:1 pot odds.

bet the river. . .you leave too much $ on the table w/trips and the king of clubs.
if he raises, feel sick about it. Probably fold.
