Nl tourney. 15 /30 blinds.
Got dealt Q Club Q Heart , raised 150, 2 callers.
Flop came 2 Diamond 3 Diamond 2 Heart
Pot was approx 470.
First player checks, second player bets 30. I decide to try and take the pot down in case he's after the flush so I bet 540. First player folds, other guy calls.
Turn is A Club
I have about 700 chips left and he's got roughly the same. He checks, I go all in, he calls.
He flips A Spade J Heart
River rag.
I'm out.

Thing is where did I go wrong here? Why did he call my post flop bet? I thought he may have been after the flush but he wasn't. In fact he called a big bet with nothing atall.

The problem is they see a flop like that & know it didn't hit you (not thinking about you didn't need to improve). The only thing wrong was the turn all in - You needed to slow down on the ace - Just like if an Ace would have flopped.

If he has an underpair, you are most likely going to win the hand anyway. I wouldn't worry so much about giving a flush draw the free card as now the ace is out there & it may be you that needs the free card.

I agree the all in after the ace came was questionable but I still thought he must have been on the flush draw. I didn't know what else he could have been on unless he had a lower pair than mine, in which case I was still good here. Also half my chips were in there already.
I dunno. Rolling Eyes

I hear you... Definitely a borderline decision... Just think it will be tough to get a call unless your beat.

You'll get a lot of these Ace-chasers calling through bad pot odds. Basically these guys probably hand more solid poker players a ton of chips&money in the long run.

It's hard to slow down in situations like these too, show weakness when an ace falls and aggressive players will bet all over you.

Tough decision.

Thinking about it though... This may be a hand where I would rather call the all in then push it.

If I push it, I most likely get called by only someone who has me beat.

If I call, I still may be beat, but it gives the opponent a chance to bluff also.

I have to agree with the way you played this hand in my opinion until the A came up on the board. I watched this happen several times in SNG's I played this weekend. Several times I watched as a player would hit a peice of the flop and bet big. The person holding AX, who had also hit ,would just flat call right behind them. But I can't say that is what the player you were facing was doing.

Thats a good point.

Why that over bet on the flop? If he is drawing, only half of the pot is enough and you are much better condition to slow down after the turn.

I don't mind the flop bet at all - He figures to be ahead, a flush draw or middle pair will likely call & he needs to make them pay for that draw.
