Limping with TT

Posted Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:49 am GMT by weirpougs
last night i played a 6 handed £5 freeze out tourney. start with 500 in chips blinds start at 5/10 (increasing every half hour)

so we are down to 5 players blinds at 10/20:
SB folds
BB calls (300 chips)
utg folds
(me) button raises 50 with TT (600chips)
BB calls

flop comes:
XXJ (two blanks were lower than J and no flush draw)

BB bets 50
i reraise him all in
BB calls - showing J4o!!

needless to say turn brings a 4!
i said nh to him. but about 2mins later I couldn't stop myself from saying: "how did you call a preflop raise with J4o!"
belive me this play almost put me on tilt.

so down to three, blinds 20/40 and i'm on the button again. (the player in the last hand makes it down to the final three) so this time I decide to limp in and try and trap them.

(me) button calls (TT)
SB calls
BB checks
flop:
66J

SB raises 150
BB calls 150
so now i'm really confused as to what they have.
thing is i know the guy in the SB would bet less with a weaker hand, but the BB calling means he is likely to have two overcards or more likely QQ.

what would you of done? i'll post the answer in a bit, if you need any more details just say.

1st hand, blinds 30, your raise 50, that leaves 80 in the pot and he has to call 30 more to win 80. Those odds justify a call w/ nearly any 2 cards. If you dont want to face J4 or the like, you need to bet more. Would you have felt better if he had AJ KJ QJ J10?

2nd hand, those raises arent that big, and a loose call from the BB doesnt scare me too much. I do NOT believe that they are on QQ or better, they should reraise w/ a big hand, late, and a decent amount in the pot.

Depending on stack sizes, I may go all in here. Or, just smooth call, and hope for undercards. If a Q or J come, I put out a small bet. A or K, just check down or fold. Undercards I am all in.

yes did go all in and they both folded.

i showed my hand and they said they had
J7o and KJo. :D

i then went on to win the tourney. Wink

I don't understand this play. You bet 2.5X the BB and the BB calls you with j4. Now this is a terrible play on his part, but honestly the bet you made is hardly going to push people out of the pot unless you have an incredibly tight table image - even then its doubtful. I'd bet 80-100 here. That is 4x-5x BB. It suggests you have a premium hand and can generate a fold. Loose players like to call, but they won't call with garbage if its going to cost them a good percentage of their stack.

After this, your second play is odd to me. By not raising pre-flop you got really lucky I think. Your opponents seem to have placed you on a six - I doubt they would have done so if you had raised pre-flop. However, this is a lucky case, and generally you want only top hands to call. A decent raise pre-flop here and both hands may have folded - unfortunately in this case the KJ may have called you, and you would have been less able to bluff on the flop because of your pre-flop raise. In the long run, I think pre-flop raise is the better play - especially in a 3-handed game with large blinds...

What I was suggesting is that with a hand like TT (a relatively high pocket pair) you either want a lot of people in the hand and hope you get a set (if you don't - fold to a bet with overcards on the flop most of the time). Or you want a single (or maybe 2) opponent(s) because you have a greater possibility that even if an overcard hits on the flop you may still have the best hand...

I'm confused.

The problem with taking internet poker advice is that 90% of the time most people don't know what they're talking about, 9% have trouble explaining it/only half get it, and the other 1% doesn't like to share.

Yeah!

I remember being banned from a satanist forum (no, I'm not one of those)...After repeated bantering from me about how life as 'religious fundamenlists' was like and if they got sundays of...because that's like a christian thing, so I wondered if satanists had to work their ass off on sundays and stuff...so suddenly I get these obviously very temperamental persons not understanding my true concern for their choice of uniform lifestyle responding to me...so I gave them some friendly advice on career paths, some links to alternate religions that don't involve so much leather (hare krishna and stuff) what to dedicate his life too and how nice his mother was, and next thing you know I'm in a bitter flamewar and I get banned from a forum dedicated to freedom and evil for 'flaming'...Supa is right, most people are just _plain_ weird, and they never really read posts properly either. So answers are always out of context.

TT used to be my favorite hand. It's not anymore.

I like to limp/raise. Limp in assuming overcards are going to hit and you'll need a set to take it down. If someone raises, you come over the top as he's more likely to have AK or AQ and you're a slight favorite. I've found this is a good way to get the appropriate number of players in for your play.

If there's huge action after you limp, fold. Often times though, if there's a rasie and you push, you can buy a pretty good sized preflop pot.

Thngs change in a 3 handed game, now way I'd limp in with TT, ever.

If I go broke, then I go broke.
