playing low pairs profitably...

Posted Sat Sep 17, 2005 7:50 am GMT by jonesyb
can someone explain to me how this works... i am trying to explain it to a friend of mine... it seems right in my head but i cant put it in to words.

i have seen some good articles on this but i cant find them now.

ie.. it is 7.5 - 1 to make trips on the flpp if you hold pocket pair.... so you need to bet the minimum amount with x amount of callers and get action afterwards etc to make it profitable in the long run etc....

sorry... i ned to stop smoking the greenery i think,....

i am sure someone on here will know what i am on about.

Yeah you pretty much have it right. In a multiway pot, you're probably only going to win if you hit a set, or a straight of some kind. Since the odds are about 7.5:1 like you said, you need to get that much times the money you invest BACK to you when you do in fact hit. So you haveta know how much you're willing to invest.

Personally, I will call any normal sized raise with them regardless, up to about 8-12 BB (depends on the game), as long as the stacks are deep enough.

I may sometimes fold a low pair if I'm in early position on an aggressive table with lots of pre flop raises.
Otherwise call and hope to hit the set. One thing about low pairs is that u can often take someone to the cleaners if u hit. Thats the beauty of them.

ok, i play on 0.02/0.04 NL tables.

if someone makes a 4 x big blind raise quite often there will be 4 or 5 callers. if i see this and i am in late position and i am holding a low pair... for example 22... i like to call this to see the flop.

should i be folding these low pairs when this happens...

what if there are 4 or 5 people that went all in (the max buyin is $8 ).. not that it would happen but you never know on those micro no limit tables... only takes a few people with A10... AJ... whatever.
if i was holding the 22's would it be ok to call...

:D

edit/

hmmm maybe forget the all in thing. i just realised that if the 5 people went all in it would take away any implied odds, yeah? which would mean if people were going all in it would take 8 or 9 people to go all in to make it profitable in the long run... yeah? no?

how about i make the amount $1 instead.... if there was a raise of $1 how many callers would it take for me to call with the 22's...

Use the 5-10 rule. Less than 5% of your stack, call everytime. More than 10% of your stack, fold everytime. Somewhere in between, use your judgement.
