who gets the blinds?

Posted Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:56 pm GMT by 97hills
Just a quick question:

What happens to the blinds if a person has just been knocked out but is due to get one of the blinds on the next shot?

For example, if someone was knocked out while they were on big blind (and therefore due to get the little blind next). WHat happens to the little blind? Is it just left or does someone else have to put it in?

If the person who are next in line for the big blind busts out, just skip him and let the person after him post the big blind.

If the person who are next in line for the small blind busts out one simple thing is to use a 'dead blind' (fictional blind) on the chair of the person who busted out and play this round without a small blind.

These two simple rules make sure noone gets to skip a big blind or gets a 'free hand' because somebody busts out of the game.

Correct - most online sites don't apply this rule correctly. Pokerstars doesn't and Partypoker didn't use to (don't know if this has changed on PP).

I've noticed the same on the sites I play too. Can actually be a bit annoying if you are just barely 'hanging in there' and some other shortstack gets to skip the BB.

If both the small and big blinds busted out. Would you freeze the dealer button and make the next two players in line the small and big?

I'd send the big blind to the next player in line still on the table and play the round without a small blind. This would let a player hold the dealer button twice in a row, but I think the important thing is to not let anyone skip over a big blind.

Though I haven't encountered this specific situation, so maybe someone knows this better than I do.

Hi Guys,

Tell me if I'm getting it right, so the basic rule is nobody in the rotation skips the BB (unless of course booted out), and nobody plays BB twice? Sad

Correct.

Example:

Players 1-5

1 SB
2 BB
3 UTG
4 MP
5 Button

If the BB gets knocked out this hand, UTG would be the next BB and there would be no SB.

If UTG gets knocked out, then MP becomes the BB and BB becomes the SB.

Clear as mud?

Thanks!

not sure if it's kosher for me to post this... but one of the guys on my site whiped up some pics to help illustrate this. it's funny, this was one of the hardest things for me to grasp when i first started playing... now, it's second nature. when a situation arrises i just know what the correct blind positions are - but if you were to ask me to explain it, i probably couldn't. LOL

anyway... here's the pics: Moving Button Rule

feel free to yank the link mods if this isn't okay. just tryin to help!

Grinder, I have to disagree with a couple examples. Multiple BB, or more than two blinds, on one hand isn't right.

What tame said is right, I'm pretty sure.

Hand two is played without a SB. 2 = D, 4 = BB, 5 = UTG.
Hand 3. 2 = D, 4 = SB, 5 = BB, 6 = UTG.
Then proceed as normal.

In the "both blinds bust" example, I think:

hand 2. 1 = D 4 = BB, no SB, 5 = UTG
hand 3. 4 = SB, 5 = BB, 6 = UTG
then proceed as normal

I'm not sure if this is an "official" way to handle it, but that's how it's been in every tournament in which I've played. If it's a home rule, I guess there's nothing wrong with that either.

Yeah OR. I have no idea what the hell you guys are doing there but it looks way more complicated than it needs to be.

which situation are you refering to in this one?

in this case, you're either allowing position 5 to get away with not paying a small blind and/or 6 to get away with paying no blinds at all for the round. this, or you're maintaining a sb behind the button for the rest of the game as the blinds would never correct themselves. it's hard to visualize in written form... i had to draw it out (LOL). while the double blind busting out in the photos can be confusing, it maintains the proper blind payment requirements of everone remaining at the table.

this isn't to say i have any problems playin in games that don't use the "moving button" rule... indeed, often we'll do things like skip small blinds and the like when and where appropriate. but if we're going to play a game with the moving button rule, we make sure we actually use the rule appropriately so that everyone has to pay their equal share at the table.

it is more complicated than it needs to be. that's why we don't often play the moving button rule. lol. easier to just have the occasional double BB and/or skipped SB. however, if we start a game with the understanding that we're going to use the moving button rule, then we make sure we do it properly so that everyone pays their share (as i mentioned above).

i've no problem at all though with other methods... so long as they're made clear ahead of time and you don't have a situation where ppl are just making things up as they go.
