Tough hand to get away from, but I have the worst of the hand most of the time holding that J. He raised under the gun, so depending on his play on other hands, he could very well have had a big hand going to the flop. It's just one of those hands that is either gonna collect a big pot or is going to cost some of your stack.

Of course this is very relative to the player(s) you're opposing, but did you consider folding preflop? I'll probably get flamed for this but I don't consider AJo or AJs that great a hand. It's one I classify as a hand I'll raise with in late position and/or an unraised pot, but only rarely call a raise with. That being said, it's opponent specific.

In this case you did call, so here's what I think about the hand. Flopping the trips pretty much pot commits you right there with your stack. You leading out on the flop was fine if you had seen your opponent preflop raise in early position and check/fold to a probable scary board on the flop. Once he calls your flop bet and opens the action on the turn how did you feel about your hand? Did you feel like he actually improved with the turn card or that he was just letting you bet his trips for him on the flop?

More questions than answers I guess. All I think about this hand was it wouldn't have been a problem if you'd folded preflop. You had no money invested and a marginal calling hand to a preflop raise and subsequent call (barring a read on the players). All this being said, once you (or me for that matter) see that flop there's a very good chance that your (or my) shortstack is going into the middle.

Let me ask another question then ErinJeff. What types of hands do you call preflop raises with?

I'll second the notion that AJ is not that great facing a raise. AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK, and AQ all have you in bad shape. And any pair TT and lower is pretty much a coinflip(TT may even have a slight edge over you since it takes away two of your straight cards). The other thing to note is the raise came from UTG, you need to respect these raises a little more than late position raises.

AJ is not a "horrible" hand and there are times I like to play it, but calling a raise from UTG is not one of them.

It's very player, position and stack/blind dependent. and I don't have a general rule. Sometimes I call 89s to a preflop raise, and sometimes I'll fold AQ. My point was that AJs or unsuited is a hand that I don't feel bad about folding preflop in a less than favorable situation. With hands like AJ, KQ, AT etc. I want to be the one raising, not the one calling.

In the hand you described I probably would have called if I had seen the raiser and the caller being loose and raising with marginal hands OOP. If one (or both) were premium hand players it would be different. I am saying that in this case *I* wouldn't have felt bad folding AJ. My philosophy is that I don't want to get involved in raised pots with hands that are difficult to play postflop. AJ is one of them for me. I'd much rather see a J high flop with AJ in a raised pot than an A hi flop.

Good hand. Nothing you could have done.

Erinjeff, I think that folding AJ to a 2.5bb raise is leaving money on the table. LOTS of players will raise with a weaker ace or a hand like KQ or QJs. I will raise UTG with hands worse than this. If I'm going to play a hand, I am coming in raising. Not a big raise, but 2-3BB to try and keep the guys who play T2s out of the pot.

With this hand, its fairly obvious that the other guy has an ace. He check/calls the flop, then fires on the turn. He isn't scarred of the two aces on the board so he has trips at least, possibly a low set.

A read on the villian in your only hope for this hand. If he is a maniac then you have to get your money in the pot. If he is a tight ABC then you could make a crying fold.

I agree entirely with this. There's nothing wrong with calling that size a raise in later position with AJs like that. There will, for the most part, be a raise put in every hand. So what hand can you all raise with, only AA,KK,QQ or AK? If so you won't be playing many hands. If you take the time to look at the hands people are raising with in early position, they won't be strong hands all the time. I know I'll sometimes make a raise with A9 or better or 88 or better from early position.

As for the actual hand itself, it's a very hard hand to lay down. I don't think I would, the likelyhood of him having the case Ace is minimal, although a possibility. Him leading out on the turn looks suspicious, but he could have something like QQ or JJ and doesn't put you on the Ace after your lead-off bet on the flop.

There is a logic chart here http://www.ace10.com/preflop.htm that was developed by Howard Lederer - The Poker Professor. His sister is Annie Duke.

Just follow this and you will do well.

Also, check this http://www.ace10.com/ev.htm and only bet the hands in the green and you will be in great shape.

Worry less about being spammed and more about improving.

Have you read the Player Interviews on this forum right here? I found them to be EXTREMELY good reading. Especially liked the last one on Daniel. Good insight there. Excellent reporting too. Job well done.
