Side pot Determination in Texas Holdem

Posted Wed Feb 25, 2004 9:07 pm GMT by pangu007
How is the side pot determined in Texas holdem. I always play jetset poker online, is the side pot something jet set does or is this rule played everywhere.

If it is played everywhere how is the side pot determined?

All help is greatly appreciated

A side pot is started when three or more players go in on a bet that one of them can't cover. The amount of chips the lowest stack has is matched by all other players and set aside while the remaining players can still bet the side pot which is between them. This happens because you can't win more than you put in the pot. If the shortstack wins he gets only the main pot, if someone else wins they get it all.

i'll give you an example of the explanation from above to try to make more clear to you. i'll use 3 players as an example.

player1(p1) : 150TC
player2(p2): 900TC
Player3(p3): 1000TC

preflop:

p1 goes all in. p2 and p3 call.
mainpot: 450TC

flop: Ad, Kc, 10c

p2 bets 100TC and p3 calls.
mainpot: 450TC
side pot: 200TC

turn: 2d

p2 bets 50TC and p3 calls.
mainpot: 450TC
side pot: 300TC

river: 10d

p2 checks, p3 checks

showdown:

p1 has AA for aces full
p2 show K, 10 for 10's full
p3 shows 8c, 7c

payment:
p1 only gets the main pot of 450TC
p2 gets the side of 300TC.

Just to clarify this (and I'm sure it is what you meant ballbp, it is just not quite what you wrote) - You can't win more FROM EACH PLAYER than you put in the pot. As the example given showed, you can win more than you put in providing that more than one opponent calls your bet.
