What price to stop this happening?

Posted Mon Sep 26, 2005 9:32 am GMT by zeroswarm
OK, this keeps happening to me. Question is how do I stop it?

Here's the latest example....$25 NL cash game.

A Heart K Spade

Few limpers, I raised pre flop to $1.50, 1 player called, pot = $3.50.

Flop: 8 Diamond 7 Club K Heart

Now I don't mess around here. I bet the pot...$3.50. Fair enough????? (thats the question I want answered).

He called.

I'm not going into the rest of the betting. Its not actually the important thing to me. Enough to say I lost a fairly big pot... Embarassed

The hand finished....
Turn 8 Club
River 3 Heart

He showed 8 Spade 6 Club and won with 3 eights.

As I said, this sort of thing just keeps on happening. Here this guy called a pot sized bet of $3.50 with a much inferior hand. What I want to know is if my post flop bet was big enough?
Should I have raised like $7 or something...? Confused
Any help would be welcome.

Ugh. Thats pretty much you ronly option. (Raise more.) Unfortunately, if he was dumb enough to call the pot size bet, he could easily call more.

Thats poker.

I'll ask you a question...

Are you sure you don't want him to call?

Theoretically I would agree that u shouldn't complain about being called here.
In reality being called has cost me dearly a number of times. On balance I think I'd rather not be called. Better to take a small pot than end up losing a big 1...

u played it fine preflop and on the flop.

I'm interested in hearing about the next two streets. . . these streets are very important for long-term success and yet you discount it as though the hand should be stopped playing after the flop.

Push those strong hands such as AK a little stronger. Don't over push but again push to keep people like this guy off of the draw. My thinking he was an ESPN pro, where they tell you to always play 86o.

Most times you can take advantage of a player like this but occasionally they will hit a hand playing crap hands and beat out your good ones.

Edit I am curious as well on what the blinds were. Best way I have found to play AK is to push pre-flop with a bet of 4-5xBB. If your opening bet was that big then this guy was an idiot and got lucky.

It's not that I discount turn/river play. Its just that the question I really wanted an answer to was if I'm underbetting on the flop in this type of situation. Basically I was thinking of increasing my bet to maybe 1 and a half times or even double the pot or something. (To determine the size of the bet on the flop is the whole point of the thread).
From the replies thus far it seems like the size of this bet is ok.

If u want the full gory details of the rest of the hand................

turn 8 Club
I bet 5 dollars. He called.
River 3 Heart
I checked (got worried by now).
He bet 6 dollars, I called. (Actually thought I'd lost so u can argue I should have folded. Fact is I was so intrigued to know what he had I'd have probably called more than that).
He took the pot with 3 eights. I lost about 16 dollars.... Embarassed Embarassed

I'm not overly worried by the loss here. Overall I've been doing reasonably well at these games considering its only fairly recently I've been playing cash games atall. Originally I exclusively played sngs and I'm sure u will agree that sngs and cash games are 2 completely different beasts....
I'm still on a learning curve as far as cash games go and it would be helpful if I could figure a way of avoiding, or at least limiting, the number of losses like this.

What are the blinds for this table?

If you consider your preflop bet standard for a good hand then there is nothing to be done, you WANT this guy to call you on the flop after all, he's a big dog to you now.

Betting the pot here is totally acceptable and a good play most of the time.

Bet the pot and rejoice in someone with an 8 calling you down. I probably do what you did on the turn/river.
