Can an empty seat win a hand?

Posted Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:37 pm GMT by LEVIII
IF someone buys in for a tourney, and then doesnt show up to play and their chips are there and they are blinded off as the tourny goes, when they are finally all in is their hand played, or cant be flipped over cause no person is in the seat.

If we are talking online poker then yes a non-player hand can win. If a player is dosconnected online and they do not make it back then their blinds are posted as the game progresses. When they get down to where their pot only covers the blind then they are all in. In which case the cards are delt as usual. If they end up with the best hand then they do win and the game keeps going till they are blinded out and do not win their last hand.

If we are talking live games in a casino then I am not sure. I never saw this occur.

I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. I've seen this a LOT, and if only one person calls, the disconnected player, if on the BB, mucks. Whenever the disconnected/sitting out player goes all-in on the blinds, they muck if someone calls. I suppose if the disconnected was in the BB, and even the SB folded, he would win, but thats never going to happen.

What? If an absent player is allin they can't muck unless they lose the hand. You can't be allin then muck before all the cards are dealt.

note: i'm still just talking online

If a player is absent and has blinded down to the point where they are "all-in", THEN they can win a hand. Happens all the time in the tournies I play in.

I to have had this happen many times online. Sometimes it has taken me 10 hands to beat a player who isnt there.

Live, an all in can win a hand even if absent. Most tournaments I have played have a rule, no person at the time of deal, the hand is mucked. So in those cases, it would be mucked, but that is a special rule.

Weird, because I've seen the all-in player's cards mucked when away.

I play at PS and if an absent player is all-in because of the blinds/antes his hand is mucked immidiately pre-flop.

THANK YOU! Now I don't feel like I was losing my mind. Maybe it's different at each site?
