I think glass is a great material and a great one for making card protectors. I got one made of a fat buddha by this glass blower. She specializes in Blowing card protectors so peep it out.

She gives you a link where there are 1,000s of dichroic images to choose from as well as different shapes as to how the protector is made.
I'll post pics of the ones she made for me soon.
