my buddy and i had a slight dispute over whether the following scenario should be a split pot. We were playing a regualar game of Hold Em' with the 'best 5 card' hand. The board brought up an Ace  , 10 , 8 , 6 and 2 , so the board was showing an Ace high flush. I had the King in my hand and he had a Jack . I argueed tht I won because my 5 Clubs (specifically my King as my second highest and him with only a Jack), were better than his, he argued it was split because the Ace on the board was high and you don't count past the high card on a flush.

You always make the best 5-card combination possible, so unless those hands make the exact same flush (by holding the board only) it is not a split. In this example your flush wins. And ofcourse you count more than the highcard of the flush, if not there would be a pretty darn big number of split pots in the poker world.
