Need to learn to bluff?

Posted Fri Oct 21, 2005 2:29 pm GMT by cforce
I consider myself a very tight player I don't seem to bluff, I'll chase the occasional flush or straight but besides that I usually stick to solid hands. The guys I usually play are starting to catch on, therefore when they see me raise they know whats going on. I guess this gives me the upperhand but does anyone have any advice to help me be a more versatile player?

Are you familiar with continuation bets and semi-bluffs? They’re good for exploiting a tight image and safer than complete bluffs.

Continuation bets are bets after any of the streets, but mostly meant for postflop betting. Let's say you are on the button and it is folded to you. You have Q9s, and you believe the buttons are tight, so you raise 3-4x BB. The SB folds, but the BB calls with decent pot odds. The flop comes with rags or 1 high card and 2 rags. If you check (and this is a solid player), he'll think two things: you're slowplaying or a weakness. Therefore, he'll lead out with a bet to chase you off if you missed or define his hand if you're slowplaying. THEREFORE, as long as this player isn't a calling station, make a bet of say anywhere to 1/2 - 3/4 the pot. This is a continuation bet as you showed strength before the flop and have *continued* to show strength after the flop.

Semi-bluffing is pretty straight forward: you have a hand that *may* be 2nd best with a draw and/or you have a monster draw. For instance: You limp in JhTh, and 3 people see the flop. The flop comes Qh 4h Kc. You have a crap tons of outs: 9 hearts, 3 aces, 3 9s, and maybe the 3 Js and 3 Ts (which we'll say is about 2 outs, though). So you have about 17 outs, so you aren't terribly upset if you get a call, but you would also be happy to take the pot right here. That's a semi-bluff.

Since you have the button, wouldn't your opponent act first? A continuation bet works a lot better if you're first to act, it looks less like a steal. Although I could be wrong.
