Gentlemen,
My poker group is in transition, and we need help.
6 weeks ago, we played a straight money game-$75 for $75 in chips. The big bet was $10, and there are 7 of us. Mostly Texas and Omaha, but it is dealers choice. We play for 4 hours.
Because of staggering loses, we switched to a $20 buy in for $100 in chips, and the top 4 players at the end of the night get paid ($60, $40, $30, $10)
We are struggling now with how to set this up. Currently, we still have the $10 limit until the las 1/2 hour, then no limit. Some players are opposed to all no limit, some are opposed to all $10 limit.
Nobody has the respect for a $10 chip they had when it was actually money, and the game starts out very out of control-the chips just fly, and bluffing is out of the question. Then it gets crazy again at the end, as we jockey for position. And since 5th place pays nothing, you can just imagine being in those shoes--you literally have nothing to lose by going all in with 7/2.
Any suggestions?
Bob
Me, I don't see how it works if it's not No Limit from the start, but I am looking for compromise.

If you're going to play limit, you should be playing much lower limit like 1/2 to make a $75 buy in work. Which you may not find too exciting, but as you remark 5/10 is pretty stiff, you can bet $75 in one hand at those stakes.
If you're going to play no limit tourney style, a good format for friendly games is $20/T100, one rebuy allowed, blinds start at 1/2 and raise every 20 min. or so. Payout 70/30 or 60/30/10 or whatever you like. If you want more action you can up the buyin or allow more than one rebuy.

you can still do no limit but change your blinds to .25/.50 or .50/1.00. $10 seems high for the level of buyin you are using. If you want to payout places then just change to a tournament structure. And then just play multiple tourneys. You can do 1 hold'em nad then 1 omaha.
