Playing in a NL tournament, the following hand came up. 6 players reamaing i am 4th in chips@ 1695. Chip leader is at about 4500. The blinds are at 30-60. UTG i get pocket 9's. I raise to 195. The chip leader calls as does the Big Blind. Flop comes 6,7,8 rainbow. BB checks and i bet 700 into a roughly 600 pot. Chip leader thinks then raises me all in. BB folds. My thoughts at this point based on what i have seen him play are that he could have very well have hit a set or be betting with a single pair like A6,7,8. I figure that if he hit his set i have 10 outs. 2 for the nines and 8 for the open-ended straight. I also could very well have the best hand. I had about 800 left in chips and there was about 2200 in the pot. I called. He had pocket 7's. What do you think of the call and betting on my behalf. The turn brought the 5 for my straight, then the river brought the other 5 for the boat for him.

I would've called.
You pretty much committed yourself with the 700 bet plus you were wagering 700 to potentially win 2900 (if I read that right), so 3 to 1 odds. If you get in that situation over and over, you'll be up if they have the best hand less than 75% of the time.
Factoring in the opinion that he very well could've had a pair with an ace, it's an understandable call with a bad result.
I probably would've gone broke there too. Then again, I've not been playing good poker lately, so maybe just ignore my input.

Totally agree... Once you make the 700 bet, you are in the hand for the long haul. You have an over pair and open ended, kind of hard to ditch the hand.

The payout structure and other players' stacks are also important factors. For example, if the two other players have 80 chips each and there is a big difference in payout from 4th to 2nd I'd fold. Otherwise I'd call.

Can't fold there, I probably would have just pushed all in with that flop instead of betting 700. With a set, you wold have been called either way though.

I probably would have done the same thing, but I would question that I had the best hand. I would have probably been betting the draw, in my mind.

You were pretty stuck at that point, you have to call. If he flipped up pocket 7's after moving all in, I'd probably still have to call him knowing my straight is good.
Sucks you made it and he caught his card to in turn beat you, but as soon as I saw that board I would know my money is going in.

You have 10 outs... 2 more for your set, plus the straight draw. That's a 1.6:1 odds against your draw, and if the pot's right, you're looking at $2900:$700... that's over 4 to 1! Easy call.
