Villain gave me grief over this hand... |

$20 buy in tournament on Poker Room.
Blinds were only at 15/30 and I was down to $500 chips (some guy chased a flush with 2 4 after I hit 3 of a kind on 4th st ).
I didn't get the hand history, so this is as accurate as I can get.
Hero (MP): 9 9 ($500 chips)
I lead out for $120
Villain ($2700 chips) calls from the button.
FLOP:
8 K K
Hero bets $380 and is ALL IN
Villain calls and shows A 8
He started giving me crap at how bad of a play this was. I already had 120 of my money in the pot and with two K out there, I figured he didn't have one. The bet was designed for a fold if he didn't hit it, or a call if he had the 8. If he had the King, oh well, I had to make a move at some point IMO.
The only other way I would have played that would be a check-raise, which would have put me all in anyways, so I figured there wasn't much difference when the guy had a huge chipstack.
Bad play on my part, or was he just pissy I doubled up off him?

Not bad at all, I would ahve done the same thing. Funny how 1 overcard can scare you off a pot, but not two of the same :D

Oh yeah, not to mention that you led out at the pot and he called with a loser. You should ahve just said to him "but they were soooooted", refering to his crappy hand of course.

I think it's fine, in fact, I may have pushed preflop.

nice hand, thats actually the texture of a good flop for 99 ... with the other obvious two of set of 9s, and the 9s as an overpair
yeah he called you with the worst hand ... preflop ... postflop
side note: i hate this spot with 99 ... if the blinds were 25/50 or 50/100 you could easily justify a preflop push, but with 15/30 ... thats why you'd rather not get so short stacked early on in a tourney cause its hard to know when to pick a good spot to try to double up then ... try not to get yourself into this spot ... overbet a pot when theres a flush draw out there to get rid of em

He called you're all-in in a raised pot with that hand and you care about him giving you grief why? Just tune them out and win the tourney./list

A good play. He's just mad, simple as that.

I never said I cared that he was giving me grief, in fact, I spent the next 3 minutes explaining to him why I made that play and that it wasn't stupid. I basically wanted to get some more opinions from you poker phenoms if I made the correct play.

How do you think I got so low in the first place? I made pot and overbet plays on that hand when the guy hit his flush draw with 2 4 . I was fuming after that one!

I think you made the correct move, although on the flop I bet about 120 and decide whether I'm playing for all my chips or not. If he plays back its a judgement call, if he just calls I push on the turn.
I don't think you played it badly, but I think there are other acceptable ways to play it.

i don't have any problem at all with how you played that. the only reason he called you in the first place is because his hand was suited. A 8 is not that great of a hand (especially when you miss the flop) so he has nothing to bitch about.

It's basically just a gamble you take when shortstacked but still have some pushing power. That the flop paired basically reduces the amount of hand holdings that will usually call you. On the plus side some hands that beat you might fold, on the bad side, if you are beat you are looking for some slim, slim draws. When As,Ks,Qs and Js pair the board, it is more dangerous, since those cards are also more likely be in the pocket of a player seeing the flop.
Interestingly, the closer your pair comes to the Ks on the board...the more useless this play becomes, well...if you have a little pushing power left atleast. Isn't that just something. ,)
As for the preflop and flop call of your opponent...well...he is not a rock that's for sure, but atleast he had position preflop and he held the paired 8 on the flop...and at the time your stack couldn't really scare him off, so I won't claim any of them were horrible...I'll stick with branding them 'optimistic'.
To berate you on the other makes his play sink too 'crap' though. Your play was better on all levels in this hand.

I don't know what the big deal was, standard play for the short stack to make, if you have the king you get my money, meantime I have the 8 beat. In fact the board pairing like that with Kings makes it a little less likely he'll have it, and it's a tough bet to call without the king.
People love to talk during games about what is a good and bad play, there really isn't much wrong with his play either if he feels you don't have the king (and with you moving in he probably can't) no need to berate you.
