Tight, playing extremely aggresive |

A couple of weeks ago me and a couple of friends have started a weekly poker game. So we are all new to poker and are learning. We play a $5 tournament, texas no limit. This one guy who plays is really aggresive. He often bets before seeing his cards, or just bets high after seeing his cards. Since I am a really tight player, trying to learn to bluff more though, I usually dont get to see a flop because of him. Sometimes I fold good hands because I know no matter what he will make a big raise after the flop. Any tips on how to play him? He also knows I am a tight player.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

follow the normal rules ... if the game is tight play loose, if the game is loose play tight
just play quality starting hands, if you don't get any then you probably won't be able to beat him on that particular night
im done ...time to drink

Thx, I just gotta smarten up and not be to tight. The main reason that I play tight is that I dont lose to quickly and have to wait for the game to finish :p Usualy if I call him, I have to be commited to put in a lot of chips.

Those are not "normal rules". I vehemently oppose them, even, and think they are dead wrong.

Play back at him.
If he plays 50% of his hands for a raise, just push him to the wall preflop if you get a quality hand, sure, you might stumble into him having a great hand, but statistically, he doesn't - and that's very important. If he has the worst of it, but sucks out on you - no biggie, you put yourself in a winning situation. I also find that after 2-3 all-ins on my behalf most maniacs start to behave polititely.
But seriously, answers to this question is often most horrendous aspect of low stakes no limit advice I see. And there is a lot of weak tight advice floating about. You _can't_ allow a maniac to control the betting on the table, you put control of the table into the wrong hands. People say call him down etc. I say don't call him down, put him to the wall when you most likely have the best hand. If you are not in the pot, it doesn't matter what this guy does. When you come into the pot, he should go 'uhoh'.
That you play tournament style should make it easier than doing it in a cashgame too. Players of his type can often crush a low limit NL cashgame completely, esp. shorthanded ones, because noone plays back at them without absolute premium hands.
Make a note that it's no biggie if the maniac steals a little when the blinds are fairly low though. If the maniac annoys the table a little when the blinds are low, that's just good news, probably someone is going into a pissing match and knock eachother out. Or pots will swell when you get a premium hand.

strategy as your buddy. In the lower STT's these guys have no heart. They fold premium hands and flod when they have the best of it. And likewise if someone is at my table and tries that, I set traps. Just like the previous post, you need to come over the top....a hand like KJ will be the best hand and you can smoke him. You gotta have heart, and then you'll move to the next level.

Yeah, I think supa and I went back and forth on this and finally figured it out: If a game is tight, play tight, but slightly looser. If a game is loose, play loose, but slightly tighter.

drinking makes the pain go away
i think if you're playing a loose guy like that, the best way to deal with him is to play tight, or just randomly push all in if you think you can get him to fold if you aren't getting any cards
