Critique My Final Table Play

Posted Thu Nov 03, 2005 11:41 pm GMT by Rounder Wannabe
Critique my play. Im going nuts here.. im pretty sure i made the wrong play now that i think about it, but oh well its poker,

Let me set this up

Final Table at a WPT satellite tourney.
9 Players Remaining
Everyone playing more tight/aggressive than loose/aggressive. No one getting too out of line.
3 tables/10 players per.

Blinds 200/400.
Im UTG+3

>>Cards dealt, fold around to me and i pick up QJ Spade So i call
To this point i've been playing tight-aggressive poker. haven't played too many hands, check raising, raising, limped in only twice.

>>fold to the button, she goes all in $1100.

>>SB Folds

>>BB Folds

>>UTG Calls

>>I call. (This is where i think i made the mistake. If I fold and he wins, i move up a place. If he loses, he just doubled up a chick whom i played with before and is very dangerous)

>>FLOP x Club Q Diamond x Club (I cant remember what the clubs were)

>>UTG checks

>>I go all in $2600

>>UTG sits there for a couple of minutes.. and finally calls (with his call he has about 1 BB remaining.

Pocket Cards
>>Button: Pocket 2's
>>UTG: KA Club (Flush Draw)
>>Me: QJ Spade Top Pair.

TURN: 5 Club

River: Rag.

Just like that he knocked us both out.
When the flop came down, my read on him was that he didn't hit. If he was drawing, i figured my all in would have made him fold since we were almost even in chips and getting close to the bubble.

My decision to go all in was pretty decisive. If i didn't hit a drawing hand, i would have dumped it right away, but since i hit top pair, i figured i had to protect against the flush.

In hindsight, I probably should have folded when he called her all in bet.

What could i have done differently? Anything? Fold when he called her all in?

Or maybe i should have raised pre flop?

ehh. same result would have happened. she would have went all in and he would have called or reraised anyways.

I would have folded since UTG called...just my humble opinion. Let him knock her out. QJs is not that great a hand to showdown an all-in with, especially with another caller in front of you.

Yeah, I think I would have layed it down when she went all in pre-flop. As stated, QJ isn't the best hand to call a big all in like that with, you have to assume you're the underdog if you make that call.

After that though, I've gotta say that was a pretty ballsy call by that other guy, calling your all in on a draw. People like their flush draws though.

QJs is nice to limp in with in late position, but I don't think you can call an "all-in" raise with that.

I think we can all agree the call preflop was the big mistake, calling off 1/3 of your stack with QJ is not a good play. Her getting a caller would make me chuck it that much faster. I could see if you had raised and she moved, and he called, now you might be getting some good pot odds.

As for moving all in with top pair and supect kicker...if you feared the flush draw from HIM...I still don't move on it, he's got pot odds, at least on the flop. Yeah he's a little light, but he also knows there he's probably got 2 overcards as well, and it's a solid call in his part.

But again, this all stems from the loose call preflop. Make a rule, if I limp with a marginal hand and it costs me a good chunk of my stack, I have to fold. If nothing else it may teach you to either lead out with a raise or know you have to fold it.
