Books

Hi, I am new to this forum so would just like to say hello first and foremost!

I am what I would say an intermediate player.

I know there are several recommended books on this website, but I would like peoples personal opinions on what they believe will help further my knowledge and skill of the game, and if possible how a book helped them to do so!

Thanks in advance for the responses!

Welcome to the forum!
I'm suggesting to everyone Dan Harrington's books, Harrington on Holdem volumes 1 and 2. They are, imo, some of the best poker written on holdem in quite a while. They are specialized toward no limit tournaments though.

I'm moving this thread over to the Poker Literature category.

foundational reading = winning low limit texas holdem by lee jones. the information is applicable (on a basic level) to all forms of holdem so don't let the low limit part turn you off.

there's many other books, including the harrington ones just mentioned... but the lee jones book is great for the fundamentals.

I always like to recommend Super/System...but I can summarize the entire No Limit Hold 'Em section in one word...Raise

Anything in this list.

Is there a specific type of poker or aspect of your game you’d like to improve on?

Wow, thanks for all the responses, didn't expect them so fast, and apologies for not seeing the "Poker Literature" section!

In regards to what I need to improve, I think my main weakness is putting what hand my opponent has. I watch the TV regularly and they always seem(with exceptions of course) to re-raise when the opponent is bluffing. I know they are professionals and have practiced and practiced, but if somebody raises and I have nothing, I tend to fold and I know some of the time they have to be just taking a stab at the pot!

General advanced betting tactics would be nice to know also!

I look forward to hearing your replies!

EDIT: Interested in NL Hold' Em

I'm saying it again, read Harrington for that stuff.
As far as reading people, the definitive book has always been Caro's Book of Tells. You can get away with picking up a copy of Super System 2 though, because a some of the Book of Tells stuff ended up in there.

OK, thanks adam, I will look for a place to buy those books in England!

I am intrigued that nobody has mentioned "The Psychology of Poker" book.

What does this book actually tell you? I would have thought psychology was a key part to poker, especially in NL

I think it is mentioned in The thread Muck posted a link too.

'Theory of Poker' is also a brilliant read, easily my favourite poker read...not necessarily for figuring out alot of practical stuff but it certainly teaches a winning way of looking at poker.
