Pushed to hard???

NL $100

2nd hand at the table. All stacks between $100-$110

UTG raises to $4
MP calls
Hero calls from MP2 w/ 5 Heart 5 Diamond
BB calls

Flop J Diamond 6 Club 5 Spade

BB checks
UTG checks
MP bets $15
Hero raises to $40

All fold.

Bottom set on a very tame looking board. I'm pretty sure that MP had AJ, KJ or QQ. Should I have just flat called and popped him on the turn?

I'm getting back into playing NL cash games and I'm playing them very aggresively. Lots of donks have been paying me off with lesser hands because I'm betting or raising everytime. This hand though, I think I left some money on the table. Thoughts?

I smooth call here. As you stated, this is a pretty tame looking board. Go for the c/r on the turn and break him.

I don't know how much more action you would have gotten on the turn. Call and raise turn screams set. Sometimes I like the raise on the flop line instead, OPs might put you on top pair.

You sure MP had overpair or AJ? He could be hoping for 88,99 or TT to be the best hand here too and try to get a bet in before you position-bet.

I concur, although your play wasn't too bad. You still got a decent amount of cash off the play.

He won't pay off on the turn unless he has a real hand. I smell AK.

Does anyone min-raise on the flop, hope he calls with just 2 overs and hits an ace or king?

Sometimes I like min-raising in this situation because weak players almost always call a min-raise, no matter what two.

I agree, sure smells like AK to me.

I also agree on that maybe the raise should have been smaller, not very likely that someone is on a draw here. Had there been two of the same suit I'd raise about the amount you did.

I don't like a 40$ raise here. If a player has top pair here he obviously believes he has a good hand - his bet of 15 seems like he has a decent hand because the board is not really scary. If he has 66 or JJ you are going to lose a lot on this board so those aren't real considerations. I would think its possible he is holding AJ or KJ and is defending against a straight, but even that is a bit sketchy. I'd reccomend two plays here:

1) Smooth call his raise. Then you can push or reraise his bet on the turn.

2) Reraise the minimum $30. I think that you may be telling your opponent you have AJ or KJ with this play and you want to isolate. If you are lucky he calls and you can again push or raise a bet on the turn/river.

And if they're truely donks they won't notice that you will slowplay a big hand on a board like this, but you bet hard with lesser hands. I think raising big here at a tough table is a great play, raising at a table full of idiots is a good play too whether or not they pay you off.

You may have left some money on the table, but I think the fact that you're sticking to an aggressive table by raising here might help you out in other hands at a table down the road.

When we're saying 'smells like AK here' are we referring to UTG or MP? UTG could have two big unpaired cards or possible a PP 8s - 10s. I think trying to keep UTG in the pot after the flop, and then pushing big on the turn would work out nicely ... unfortunately there will be no way to tell if he hits a set on the turn, but thats the risk that comes along with smooth calling.
