I agree with this. If he smooth calls, I get worried. If he does not have the high straight, he should dump it.

I would certainly raise, although I might raise as much as $20. You almost certainly have the best hand here, but I'd be happy to take it down before any more cards fall out of that deck.

I overbet the pot because half the deck is bad for us. And yes I would be willing to pay QJ off in this hand. Lots of other holdings could stay in too though. Flushdraw with overs, sets, JT, maybe two pairs....

i agree ... lots of hands will push back at you here, flush draw with a jack or 7 of spades, misc two pairs

im almost thinking folding to a raise might be a good idea here

i also want to throw out the idea of smooth calling then putting in a big bet if the turn blanks ... try to get your money in if the turn bricks so they have 1 less chance to hit their 9+ outs

I raised $11 and he smooth called. I wasn't sure want to think of his call. Did he hit his higher straight or was he drawing to the straight or flush. A set was also a possibility.

Turn: 5 Spade
Pot = $30

Villain checks. Hero .........

I think you are behind here. I would get to showdown as cheaply as possible. Hero checks the turn.

Bet half the pot, fold to a raise. If he calls, check the river if he checks to you.

No way I'm giving a free card here, we may be behind, but not necessarily so.

If you check here, nothing is stopping him from pushing the river with a hand you beat, and you will still feel like folding.

and the Spade may have scared him as much as it does you, giving you a cheap showdown or a fold.
