I have just lost my game.

I have been playing online poker now for over 1 year now.
At first I didnt really know how to play well, I mean I would get excited if I got A6o and an A on the flop. I got creamed quite a few times because my main mistake was that I didnt really see the straights and even flushes at time. Again, I was just a beginner.

After playing awhile, my game started to pick up. I made some nice dough that I cashed out on and pretty confident about my game.

Over the last 3 months, my game has gone to s**t. I am so confused. I seem to get creamed 95% of the time by chasers. Guys that get their straight or their flush on the river. It's unbelievable. And suddenly I find myself chasing (something that I swore I would never do) and lose.

It has come to the point that although I know which hands to start with, I am lost on how to bet postflop. My confidence is shot. I will not play real money for awhile until I get better.

Another thing is: if my bankroll is $1000 what tables should I play on? 3-6 ? 5-10? 10-20? or 20-40? What do you suggest.? I have played over $3000 in the last 3 months online and but in dibs and drabs $100, $250 at a time. Maybe it's better to deposit a one sum chunk and build a bankroll from there playing at bigger tables where there are maybe fewer chasers.

Help? Opinions or even sympathy??

David

I'll start with sympathy. Have u blown $3000??? If u have, ouch.

Re: ur game. Low-limit tables can be full of chasers bcos they are fools and have no respect for the game. This can be fine if ur having a good run, but if like u at the moment it's gone sour, it can be the most annoying thing in the world. Once ur confidence bombs, every hand u get and bet u make which is not on the nuts becomes an issue. Not a nice situation to be in.

Problem now is, do u play at larger tables where the risk (and reward) is higher to escape the chasers, or do u stick and wait for it to turn around? Answer is: not sure. Depends on ur situation. Large tables can lead to massive losses if ur bad run continues and also, if u pick up a few good wins it can make u feel too good, making u stay at the big tables and running the risk of losing big in the long run if ur not very careful. The worst thing u can do right now is play on fake money tables. Play is so loose it teaches u nothing and ultimately it'll frustrate u more than ever.

I'd take a wad into a modest table such as 3/6 and try to grind out a good set of wins. Try mixing up ur style and only chase when it feels right in ur gut. There's a lot to be said or gut feeling in poker, although online, with less tells, it's a trickier method to use to your advantage.

Good luck, let us all know how u get on. Remember - u can't be unlucky for ever! Razz

Folks will chase if the odds the pot are offering them are better than the odds to complete their hand. Of course this is nothing new. Bad players will chase on you, with same/poor odds of completing their hand versus the amount expected if they win the pot.

My point is that one must adjust their play. Say you are last to act, 5 calls have come ahead of you, and you A-Ko. Is this worth a raise? Probably not.

Even if you flop 2 pair, the pre-flop raise, late position, in a game of callers might have given them the odds to draw out on you post-flop.

If you fight this tendancy, while folks still respect your raises, perhaps you may be able to raise with A-Ko in early position. You will make callers pay with their bad starting hands, while forcing others to fold. The odds will be much less for people to draw out on you post-flop.

Of course, sometimes, folks will still drop 2 pair: 10's and 6's on you from time to time, when you have top pair, top kicker. But with the odds in my favor, I'd take that bet every time.

Perhaps try to see some ways to make money setting wired pairs, or using suited connectors in a game with a lot of callers.

Hope this helps...
