good site for moderately priced chip sets? |

i'm wondering what some good sites are for buying chips. i'm asking for a set as a christmas gift, so i'm not looking for paulson's or anything, just a fairly good clay or composite set, 500 or 600 count, that runs between $100 and $150.
i found these on pokerbargains.com, the "ultimate roller" set, http://www.pokerbargains.com/ultimateroller-poker-chip-set.html. i like the looks, i'm just not sure of the quality. i don't want chips that feel and look like plastic, but like i said, i'm not out to break my parent's christmas budget on a set of chips. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get a sample if you can, only way to really know if you like them. I think there's very little beyond price and looks to choose from in this range. There was some real junk (crappy molding, translucent plastic) on the market for a while, but I think that's been mostly weeded out.
One site that's good for getting samples is 5stardeal dot com. They have a million varieties and sample packs or you can order per chip if you want. A site that's good for learning about poker chips is pokerchipreviews dot com.
Nothing in the lower end really feels like clay IMO, but clay starts around 50 cents a chip for very plain chips. Nothing wrong with plastic really, WSOP and many casinos use plastic.

I would check out 5stardeal like the other guy said and look into the NEXGENS. They are good quality for a very cheap price (.25 cents per chip) or so. You can customize your entire set and a 500 count would probably run you about 100-150.

I have Nexgens and... I don't recommend them especially for anyone who wants a clay or casino style chip. They seemed pretty sweet at first but now their weight (12 g, notably heavier than most casino chips) and weird kinda waxy feel just emphasizes to me that they're definitely-not-casino definitely-not-clay chips. They're fine for a home game and I still prefer them to dice chips but if I had it to do over again I think I'd get something else. Just my 2 cents.
Again, get samples of every kind of chip you're considering. I did get samples and it didn't help me but at least I know I have no one but myself to blame.

i forgot to mention i'd prefer them to have denominations on them. i can't stand playing a game and having to explain chip values repeatedly because they're not marked on the chips.

If you want something that is middle of the road, check out the Nevada Jacks composite chips. Nevada Jacks has a special running right now on the Skull design if you buy them direct http://www.nevadajacks.net . Do be aware that they tend to charge pretty high shipping prices though.

Nevada Jacks ceramics are the way to go for something better than the plastics. Plus you should always be able to resell them if you ever want to upgrade to Paulson or BPC clays!

I hate to burst anyone's illusions and I know there's a lot of it on various forums related to chip discussion, but what do you think is the primary ingredient in either compression molded ("clay"), injection molded ("ceramic" or Bud Jones), and the Chinese imports? Would you believe plastic? Just different formulations of plastic composition.

as always i will recomend the clay FAUX chips, nothing beats these suckers. they are something like 6 cents a chip and they come the closest to a casino chip.

I'm like the only one on this board that doesn't like the faux chips. To me, they don't feel like anything other than what they are...plastic chips. Still, they're better than bicycle chips and they're better than metal slug dice chips. Plus, they're really inexpensive and they look decent.
However, in the end, they're still plastic chips. IMHO, they're only a margin better than the diamond style plastic chips, which are also a decent deal for what they are.

Unfortunately on that budget you won't be able to afford anything but plastic chips.But that doesn't mean you can't have a decent enough set.
I would recommend the Las vegas pro chips,you'll find them pretty cheap on Ebay,they look good and having played quite a few times with them at a buddies game I really like them.

ya i gotta say, thru my own searches for an "inexpensive" but decent set, I realized that if you want out of plastic, the cash's gotta come out of the pocket lol. I'm actually torn right now between the FAUX clays or Tri Colour plastics...Realize the FAUXs are prolly lot better and feel better, but the Tri Colour are way nicer lol.

Chipco's Unicorn chips are pretty nice for the price as well. They go for around 25 cents a chip and they feel better than most plastic chips, IMHO.
