Does anyone have any advice for a newbie? I need some strategy for online tells when playing online poker. It's easy to get a read live..but online is so freakin difficult! Any advice would be appreciated!
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

I don’t rate on-line tells much, apart from betting patterns and they’re the same as in real life.

Ugh. I hate this topic. It kind of depends on who you ask. 50% say "oh yeah, tons!", the other 50% say "your full of crap".
Things like delaying before bafore calling etc... but see that's unreliable because of connection speeds, distractions at home, work, etc.
Your best bet is to watch how they bet and try to find patterns... like, do they always min bet when holding a monster? Do they always attempt to steal when "on the button" etc.
I admit I'm too lazy to do that and just try to play solid hands.
I good thing to do is also watch chat and watch what happens at the table. If a player just got "sucked out" on, realize he may be "on tilt".
Anyways, if you want more in depth discussion of tells take a look in the "poker pyschology" forum. I think there are a couple posts in there on the subject.

1) If they make a big bet, they probably have a big hand.
2) If they make a small bet, they're probably bluffing.
3) If they make a big bet, they may be bluffing, except when it conflicts with rule #1.
4) If they make a small bet, they may have a big hand, except when it conflicts with rule #2.
5) Beware anyone who says on the flop, "I value call my nuts." You have no idea how strong he is.

In all seriousness, trying to find online tells outside of betting patterns is generally a waste of time.
Even physical tells in live games aren't too terribly important, for me anyway. It's the last thing I'll look for in a live game, and if he/she's weak enough to be giving them off, there are likely so many other holes in their game that I'm beating them handily anyway.
