Speed Cloth vs. Casino Felt

Posted Thu Mar 04, 2004 12:28 pm GMT by ORGrinder
How big is the difference? I can't seem to find the speed cloth in a burgandy.... which is the color I'd like to get.

My KEM cards are on the way... so maybe speed cloth isn't necessary (kem cards may paly better on the felt than regular cards?)?

How big is the difference? Is the casino felt just as good?

How about cleaning issues... my home games are also social occasions. If they weren't, no one would come. So if I demand that no one drink or eat at the table... I wouldn't have a monthly game. Because of this, ability to clean whatever material I put on the table is very important.

What do y'all think?

SPEED CLOTH!!!!!! accept no substitutes. I have some on one of my home tables, and it is sooooooo sweet.

Actual felt will nap up and pill after a few hours. You would be fine with any high quality upholstery material as long as it's got a smooth finish.

You ought to get a real kick out of this. At my daughter's high school graduation party we needed a table cover for a quickly thrown together game, so we used a big piece of material that was soon to be cut up and made into a habit for her older sister, who was soon to enter a convent (yeah, it's like right out of Sound of Music, they actually had to make their own.) Needless to say, no beer or cigarettes were allowed on the poker table that night. Laughing

I seriously am NOT making that up.

where can i get speed cloth? whats the difference between that and casino felt?

i just picked up a set of KEM cards, which surface would be better to play on?

speed cloth can be found at
http://www.casinocom.com/layouts.html
These fellas are great to work with. I got the diamond pattern speed cloth, and the Kem cards are like butter on a hot skillet. Very nice.

the only speed cloth i see there is "Speed Cloth, (Poker) Plain Backed 56" wide $20.00/Yard"

doesn't say what color it is.

i'd like some burgandy cloth myself... i'll shop around.

look for pool table cloth. Mali makes some good stuff.

This is a somewhat offtopic question but what kind of glue do you guys use to attach the various playing surfaces to the table?

I've got some vinyl I need to glue to my table boards but am not sure what kind of glue to use. The back isn't vinyl it's like a fine cloth weaved material. It kinda reminds me of the material my khaky pants are made of only the weave isn't as tight.

On the reverse side I need to glue on some felt but I know this probably needs a special glue too. If you use the wrong kind it'll just bleed through and make the felt hard and scratchy which is exactly what you don't want (especially for the underside which you're using to protect a nice table).

Anyone happen to know?

I've seen a few sites on building tables and most of them say to use a spray adhesive. That makes sense because you can spray as little or as much as you want.

spray adhesive works great

What is speed cloth? Is there cheap speed cloth and expensive speed cloth or is it all the same? Is it better than the pool table felt you can buy off ebay?

I've never done my own table, but I would look for
a double sided adhesive peel pad. That way, it would
be a little padded, and could be replaced if it got worn
down. I have no clue where to find it though.

I was just going to use adhesive on the padding and not the speed cloth, i was afraid it would bleed through, I am going to staple the speed cloth to the bottom of the table. :D

that's the way to do it. glue for the pad, staples for the cloth.

felt is no good. When we are talking about felt I'm talking about hobbylobby felt used for making Christmas stockings. Felt to poker players is actually woven wool, which in turn is used on pool tables. It works great. I have a table with "felt" and one with burgundy speed cloth. the speed cloth is great, and has some texture to it. I almost want to say that I like the billiard fabric better though. Also with billiard fabric, you are able to have a silkscreener put a logo on your table. you cant do this with speedcloth because of the raised "suits" texture, it will wear faster.

Speed cloth is where it's at. I didn't build my own table but got a really nice table from ebay that featured speed cloth. I was a bit skeptical at first but after playing on it it's most excellent. I had just recently played some cards at a card room and watched a guy spill coffee all over a table. Not to mention where I'm trying to shuffle my chips I've got like food stains on the felt, yuck! Good thing the guy spilled coffee on it, maybe now they'll swap it out.

Either way search for a guy by the name touchofvegas on ebay and you can see the speed cloth images on his auctions if he has any.

I've built a few tables the past year, with a couple different surfaces and speed felt is good, but I prefer velveteen! Very good stuff, and cheap! As far as glue goes... 3M spray adhesive is the only way to go. There is a lot of other brands of spray adhesive out there but I found out the hard way... Only use 3M! Good stuff.

Sorry to recap, but I love the juxtapositioning of the nun's habit as poker table cover...

It is such a beautifully modern irony.

I just hope you all won plenty of dough....... a deer a female deer!

I've only got one table and it has speed cloth on it. My next table I'm going to use billard felt, not because I don't like the speed cloth, just to try something different. The speed cloth is great for a social home game because it is very durable, it's woven nylon so it's kinda plastic-y but it works like a charm.

I used velveteen on my table and it is great. Careful when you buy it though, it comes in many different qualities. Even high quality velveteen is cheap compared to speed cloth.

I have two table. The first one is a round, 48", regular poker table that had a leather insert. I have not been able to figure out how to get the insert out without damaging the table so I built a top which covers the leather. It is the casino felt from casinosupply.com.

I am just finishing up on my second table which, is a home made Texas Holdem table, and I used Mali Billiard Cloth. I will finish the table in the morning for our game tomorrow night. I have always played on casino felt and prefer it to the others. I think it is just a personal preference modified by cost.

I think, from what I read and seen, they all last pretty long and since we only play once a week any of the fabrics would have held up. The only issue might be someone spilling something, however, I am using wooden TV trays and hope to head spills off at the pass.

After Christmas I might make some side tables that I have seen on this Forum as they looked like they would work and take up less space.

I agree. Velveteen is my favorite. Doesn't get the little furballs like felt does. It does come in burgandy too.

Suited speed cloth (blue, green, black, and burgundy) can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/5ssyx

I've played on many surfaces and settled on velveteen for my table. The cards slide on it perfectly and you can get many different colors. The best part is that we've had several spills and they've all been cleaned up effortlessly. But, the downside is, it is a lint MAGNET.

I use on of those rolling tape lint pick thingys. Works awesome. A brusf is no good for velveteen.
