Hello Fellahs!!! Last night I tried to take stab at 25NL for the first time and did well for a few hours, jumped to another table and run into a situation that I wasn't sure how to deal with.
6max 25NL
Hero in BB $0.25 ~$10 (i know shouldn't have bought in short, but...)
Villain UTG
Hero Dealt A8o
Villain calls BB, folded to SB who calls and Hero checks.
Flop rainbow....checked around to Hero who bets $1 ( I guess it could have been smaller 1/2 the pot?), villain calls and SB folds.
Turn ....Hero checks (he/she called my flop bet, safe to guess K-Xs??), villain checks...thinking back maybe i should have bet out see where I really stood)
River ....BOOM!! gotcha...Hero bets $3....Villain Raises $8....huh?? Results to come.
But I felt as though I was little gun shy playing the game, a turn bet would have really some more info but as of now, there's $6 in the pot and little bit less than $6 to go...so close to 2:1....I understand the pot odds are really important in cash games compared to tournaments and SnGs, maybe I am lost playing cash games?? All advice are welcome, cash games are a whole new thing for me. thanks!

I'm thinking the guy picked up on the weak turn check, and is trying to take it from you?

I don't like the flop bet with the K there. There is a player behind you to act, Ks and As are the most common cards to see a flop with, and you may win a small pot or find yourself in a difficult turn/river situation out of position with only middlepair where you either 1.) Give up and get bluffed out of the pot 2.) Bet and face a better hand. 3.) Sometimes win because villain is on a draw. 4.) Sometimes win because you get lucky and hit trips or 2 pair.
In situations like these its actually very good to have a backdoor draw to go with your cards.

#1 how exactly is it "checked around" to you when you're in the BB..?
#2 call or push the river- why are you afraid to play it? You've put in enough already.. let me guess he had a boat? Don't be results oriented.
