The LIMP/RE-RAISE Play

Posted Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:26 am GMT by Dat_Dude
Last night in a SnG I encountered an interesting hand and thought I would get your suggestions.

I was on the BB and picked up QQ. The pot went unraised with 3 limpers. I put in a 3x Raise and then UTG PUSHED after limping. Everyone else folded and then it got around to me. I was the chip leader and it was only an extra 500 on top of the 300 I put in along with the 100 by the three limpers, so it was an easy call for me.

The question I have is...How strong should you assume this player's hand is? How do you typically play these kind of hands? If he had been the chip leader or close to me in stack sizes, should I have been inclined to fold this hand?

Well, of course I called and he flipped over KK. I ended up hitting a Q on the flop to knock him out.

Thanks for the input.

I would assume he is pretty dang strong. He was just praying for someone to reraise preflop. I probably would have called too.

Every time I've ever encountered this 'phenomonon' (sp?) the limp-raiser has either had AA, or KK. I've seen it mostly online and maybe 2 or 3 times live. You've got to give them credit for a good hand to do that.

They are afraid they might scare people out of the pot if they raise from UTG, so they limp hoping someone in LP raises...thus getting more action on a monster hand.

I do this a lot in EP w/ monsters. Late in SNGs, people tend to raise and steal any limpers. Depending on the people remaining, who pushed, the amount of the raise, whether anyone has me covered, I will do this w/ AA KK QQ JJ AK AQ.

I'll tell you this much, I'm pretty much only calling with AA and KK if I get limp re-raised. If I'm pot committed, I'll call with AK, and QQ.

Quite frankly I think it's the worst way to get value out of KK or AA, unless you are so incredibly certain that somebody behind you will raise. Not only that, it gives the strength of your hand away, a lot . . .

If you want to steal from me personally in a tournament ... now you know how (supa take notes).
