Showing/Not showing your cards

I understand that if you fold you do not have to show your cards.

Say someone bets though and you call them and they show their cards, if they have you beat do you still have to show? Or can you fold at anytime and not show your cards?

The local poker house in Dallas says any player at the
table may ask to see any called hand. Don't know about
casinos,,, I think people should be allowed to muck if
they want, but on the other hand, It keeps everything
honest.. Some people may only drop one card and keep
the other,, not often though.

i think that at a casino... normal casino... you should always be allowed to muck if you call and are beat.

however, i can understand the reasoning behind a local poker club... one that doesn't have the same security abilities... having a rule that allows the winner of a hand to see any hand that called them. the potential for cheats or shills or whatever you want to call them is surely increased at these types of places.

in my home game... i trust everyone enough that everyone is allowed to muck... and my understanding of poker in general is that all things being equal, a beat hand always has the option to muck.
