HOME TOURNEY INFORMATION

Posted Mon Mar 08, 2004 10:25 pm GMT by JOHNO
Does anyone have information or know where to find out how to host a HOLD'EM tournement. I am planning on 20 - 40 players showing up. There has to be some kind of format somewhere. I would like to avoid coming up with my own from scratch and risk leaving out some vital information.

I already have got some good information by some of the postings on this website that I really didn't think of. Like the time limit on decisions (I think that would be frustrating waiting on a person to make their decision every flop).

I'm planning on having 5 tables to start. Then after 2 hours (is that good?) moving it down to three tables. Maybe take the top three money amounts from all tables. Have players moving on draw out of a hat for table and positions. This should keep it as random as possible. If one of the five tables do not have three players left just eliminate those positions. Then after the set time limit again have 2 from the 3 tables move to the championship table. Should we have a time limit on the championship table?

$50 buy in for $500 in chips, is this a good idea?

Just looking for ideas, please help!

Hey JohnO- the website Nicthestick posted is very good! The only thing I would suggest to you is to not treat the blind raising as if you were conducting a real tournament. If you are playing No-Limit, which I assume you are, then the blinds do not make that much of a difference. If you follow the 15-minute guideline as most casino tournaments do, your game will not last very long. What we do is determine how many people will be at the final table. Then begin raising the blinds every 10 or 15 minutes. If you don't raise the blinds then, then players will start shooting blanks at each other and the game will take hours to end. Trust Me!

I'd suggest starting out the blinds at 10/20 for 45 minutes or so, then raise to 20/40 for a half an hour, take a break. Then start at 30/60 for half an hour, 50/100 for another half an hour- and so on until the final table.

It really sucks when the game only lasts an hour or so because you have quadrupled the blinds in that time from 10/20 up to 50/100- slow it down and all will have a better time.

Another thing what we do is offer a "High Hand" and "Bounty" pool (10 bucks a person- so, 5 for the high hand pool and 5 for the bounty pool). The high hand pool is the player who possessed the best hand of the tournament gets the pool money. The Bounty Pool, some feel is stupid, but I think it's an incentive for players who have already been eliminated from the tournament to stick around until the end. How you do it is when you have players pick cards for seating arrangements- you record the players' cards/seats. Then (just you) pick a card from the seating arrangement deck, unbeknownst to the rest of the players. The person that was picked randomly is the "Bounty." After the tournament is completed, you announce the Bounty Player (the Bounty Player gets 10% for shits and giggles) and the Winner (player who eliminated the Bounty Player from the tournament gets 90% of the money). Have Fun and Good Luck!
