Sklansky's "System"

Posted Tue Mar 09, 2004 9:06 am GMT by Matt T
I just recently read about the "System" that Sklansky devised for a casino owners non-poker-playing daughter to use in the WSOP. Basically, it's this:
From the third round on; if there is a raise, go all-in preflop with AA, KK, and AKs, otherwise fold. If there is no raise; go all-in preflop with any pair, AK, any suited connector except 32 or 43, or any Axs, otherwise fold. That's it. The casino owner placed fifth in a smaller tourney using the system (and only lost when he mysteriously deviated from it!). The girl did pretty well until she ran into AA at the end of the first day.

Have any others actually tried this? I play in a $115 buy-in tourney frequently and considered giving it a shot. I've never made the final table in 9 tries so I figure, I can't do much worse.

it really depende on who you are playing against. When Sklansky wrote "The System" there were not as many players at the WSOP or other tournaments, and the level of play could be considered very good. Today, I would be very hesitant to employ the system in an enviorment where players are newer to the game and not as willing to lay down hands as good as JJ or QQ. The system takes in to account the fact that a championship holdem player hates to get all his chips involved preflop on something that is not certian. Todays internet players are not as picky. You could move over the top, and find yourself called with 10 10, and on your way down the road. just mho

That makes sense. Maybe it's because the buy-in is so low but in my only 9 'sessions' I can remember SEVERAL times where a person called TWO bigger-stack all-ins with Ax offsuit. Huh?

After reading some of the book, last night I tried to keep an analogy in my head: A tournament is a big monster. You can't kill the monster with one swipe of your sword, you have to keep stabbing and stabbing (after the first few levels). And when the monster lunges at you, get the heck out of the way! But get right back to stabbing ASAP.

That got me to the final two tables, neither of which was full but the 10k BB was coming very soon and I only had 8k so I went all-in with Kd-10d, but lost. Maybe I'll stick to this for a while and see how I do. It's not easy being green.

Only works against people who know what the heck they're doing. I got knocked out of a tourney the other day (about 200 shy of the chip leader) when I went all in with AK Spades...got called by chip leader with Jd10h...We both missed the flop, but it had two hearts. Turn's another miss, but a heart. River's an ace...Terrific! No wait..it's was the Ace of hearts. End of tournament. I'd gone all in about 5 times, never with less than a pair of queens. My cards were hot enough to beat anybody but poor players.

Next time I play with that bunch I'm just using basic ring game strategy modified for too many callers. Two idiots at your table is paradise...a game full of them is Hell.

I got kicked in the 'nads the other day when I threw all in pre-flop with a pair of hooks, thinking my opponent is on a pair of face cards. . . she turns over a suited queen king and we turn over five cards . . . last two cards are a queen and a king!
