Quick Question

Can someone please clarify a problem I am having with a friend?

When playing Texas Hold Em, is it correct that your two hole cards are mandatory in your 5 card combonation (your 2 hole cards + any 3 community cards)?

No.

You do not have to use your hole cards.

You make the best possible 5 card hand out of the 7 cards in play.

You may use none, 1 or both your hole cards.

best 5 card hand from the 2 in the hole and 5 on the board....you DO NOT have to use both, or any, for that matter from your hand.

So then if this comes up...

Player 1 : 2 Spade , 9 Heart
Player 2 : 5 Club , 4 Club

Flop : A Spade , 10 Spade , K Spade
Turn : Q Spade
River : J Spade

Then does everyone have a Royal Flush?

Yes. There are no kickers in play here because the royal flush takes up the 5 card hand. Therefore the pot is split.

hmm makes no sense to me but ok. I just don't understand why you would be dealt 2 hole cards if you don't need to use them

The rule is just that you make the best 5 card hand from the 7 available. If this happens to exclude your hole cards then so be it really. If it makes you feel better, it is quite rare that you don't use either of your hole cards Wink

it's just the way the game is played. Also, it adds a lot more mystery + danger to your opponents hands if they only have to use one.

If you want a game where you have to use two, play omaha.

I had pocket kings once and the board ended up 9999A. Unbelievable. The three remaining players split the pot. I think that one guy had an ace because he sure went crazy when the fourth nine fell, but fortunately it was limit and me and the other guy just called one bet.

You are just lucky it wasn't 9999K with the A in someone elses pocket.

Thankyou Thankyou!!

I had this exact problem at a game tonight with a bunch of friends who are newbieers than me!

I held a K & 6 (suits not important)

comm cards

10 J 10 A Q

had a fair bit in the pot, pushed the bets up

then go to claim the hand and was told that I have to use both cards in my hand so 2 pairs beats me!!

WTF???

I didn't want to put on too much of a show (not playing for money - YET!) so after trying to explain and giving examples that they may have remembered seeing on TV poker - like if you have only one card of suit in hand and claim a flush with 4 in the community cards - and reading the (very basic) rules that came with the poker set (which we all had different interpretations of - of course!) - I reluctantly reliquished my pot to the two pair holder (coincidentally also the owner of the poker set - and a renowned sook .. Crying ...).....

Only played a few more hands before another heated discussion developed (I not involved this time - I folded all my hands) and someone cracked a shit and walked away from the table and the game was over.

Am so glad to come here and read that I was right!!! Now I want to go and show those bastards the rules and get into some serious playing!!

too late though, have to wait another 4 weeks..... Twisted Evil
