Is this a good setup for a six handed session?

Hello guys,

I'm new to this forum and I hope we'll have some good discussions here. Me and some of my friends have been starting to play Poker just a couple of weeks ago. One can say we got addicted!! I even decided to build my very own Poker table! :D

Well, I will host a Poker session with five of my friends this weekend. Since none of us ever won all the the chips when we were playing (each time we had to finish early to get some sleep), I made my mind up about how a good tournament setup would look like.

I'm planning to give $10.000 (in chips, of course) to each of the six players. In order to increase the overall game speed, I would like to use the following blind stepping: Starting with $50/$100, the big blind is increased by $100 every 10 hands (small blind is half the big blind) up to a capped limit of $1000 (which is one tenth of each players starting stack).

One more thing: If you're playing for money, how do you preferably pay off? Does the winner take it all or do you have certain amounts of the overall pot, i.e. 50% 1st place, 25% 2nd place, 15% 3rd place and 10% 4th place?

I'd go for 'doubling' the blinds (or to a near practical number) per a given time intervall and then agree on what blind sizes you wish to stop the doubling at. Using 10, 20 or 30 minutes per doubling is pretty common depending on how much action you want in the game.

As for prizes, personally I recommend 2/3 for 1st and 1/3 for 2nd in a 6-player tourney. Some like winner-take-all but I always enjoyed that the 2nd place finisher gets a little something too, plus it means the last two players (if willing) can cut deals for the prize and a new tournament can quickly get started.

Wow, good luck. I would have to bet that using 50/100 and only increasing blinds every 10 hands would make for a VERY long game, unless the players tend to overbet alot and people like the all ins. I just had one lastnight. We had 13 people and starts with $6,000 each. Blinds started 25/50 and basically double every 20 minutes. It took 5 hours. We start the blinds low, to allow everyone a good amount of time to play and let the less skillful players get to bet some. Toward the end, the big blind was over 4400, and we still had 4 people left! I would definitely suggest using a timed method, versus a number of hands. Sometimes one hand can take over 5 minutes.

There is a VERY good site that give advice and has templates for blinds and such. I am pretty sure I cannot post a link, but I hope I can atleast say the name. Look for home poker tourney in google.

Yes, I reccomend that site as well. It's highly creditable and usefull for info about home games. It provides many neat features as well. Definately check it out.

my friends and I have a different setup.
we each start with approx. 100 worth of chips.
blinds start at 1-2, and go up based on how many people are in the game.
if we have 6 people in the game, blinds are raised every six hands, with 5 people they go up in 5 hands, etc... This keeps the games to a maximum lenght of about 90 minutes.
we raise them like this
1-2
2-4
3-6
4-8
and so on and so forth. It is a little bit of a turbo blind structure but the pace is almost perfect.

You get 90 min out of that structure??? Wow! Laughing

Whats so suprising about that?
We set our record game length on sunday at just under 2 hours.
sometimes one game will take us only 40 minutes which was just how the game pace turned out.
Usually our rounds with 6 people take about ten minutes.

Must be some slow dealing, I think.

At 6 min blinds, I'd think that the game would end quite quickly.
