Prematurely Shown Hand After Announcing All-In

Posted Wed Jan 25, 2006 12:42 am GMT by roblepp
Great forum...My first post.

I am by no means a newbie to the game, but sometimes (I'm sure like all of us) I am a little questionable when it comes to the more obscure rules of the game.

Here's the scenario: There are 3 players and the hand is dealt correctly. Player in first position (me, in this case) gets an A-7 and decides to move all in. The player in second position calls the all-in raise and then the player in first position (again, me) flips his cards, forgetting that there is still one player (the dealer in this case) that has not acted on his hand.

The dealer in this hand demands a redeal. The first and second position players basically tell him to go to hell. Either call the all-in raise or fold. It should be an easy decision considering I have shown my hand.

What is the exact rule in this case? Yes, I made the mistake of prematurely showing my hand, but certainly the game goes on as if my hand was never shown. If anythig, it is an advantage to the player who has not yet made the decision to call the all-in raise.

What do you do?

You generally only redeal if the dealer has messed up the order of dealing or irregularies have been found in the deck or the dealer has exposed two cards or more when dealing.

You usually only fold your hand if you fold it, make an action that can be seen as you folding it or your hand contains cards that could/should not be there.

Flashed hands are usually played live, usually kept up so that everyone may seem them and the play progresses as usual.

I know some games may force penalties on flashed hands but this is generally not inforced during _that_ hand.

So I say play continues, and no misdeal.

The hand would not be re-delt. Dealer now has some what of an advantage to see if he wants to call the all-in or not.

I did something similar relatively recently. I had rockets, my opponent bet almost all of his chips, but not all, I interpreted it as an all-in...I called and flipped my cards. This wasn't an issue though, because we were heads up...my penalty was having to play the rest of the hand up.

The problem is when there are more than two people in the hand. It gives an advantage to some players, but not others. What happens when someone shows their hand prematurely (intentionally or not) varies by house rule (I think some people even say that showing your hand kills it), but you never, ever redeal a hand that's in play.

yeah, bin there done that, can relate to you 100%

when we first started, we introduced this rule that if anyone saw anyone else's cards, we will call it a 'bum deal' and start again. (you have to remember we couldn't even shuffle a pack of cards without 1 or 2 going face-up, alone deal 2 cards each, to 8 players!!)

then someone decided that if their cards were rubbish, they could quiet easily "accidently" up turn one of their cards and the whole pack would be re-shuffled and dealt. as you can imagine, the game took all-night.

we therefore brought in a rule. "the dealer's decision is final" sometimes it works in their favour, sometimes it doesn't"

oh what fun we had!!!!

nice 1st post rob!

Yeah, I think the group has to be aware of how every rule could be abused.

For example, in my group, if the dealer doesn't offer the deck to be cut, it's a misdeal, but sometimes people don't notice this, and you can call for a misdeal or not, depending on the strength of your hand.

Definitely no redeal. Players act out of turn all the time and do stupid or inadvertant things. It may be advantageous for the players left to act, and disadvantageous to those who have already acted, but definitely not a redeal.
