Pocket pair analysis

Posted Sun Jan 29, 2006 4:31 pm GMT by parksah07
Since i've spent so much time playing NL tables i've designed my own little ways to imagine each pocket pair, and why, i just want to see what others feel

-pocket 2s, limp, call no reraise because hitting a set of 2s doesnt give me all that much confidence anyways
-pocket 3s, limp call no reraise, same reason as pocket 2s
-pocket 4s, limp, call no reraise,
-pocket 5s, limp, call no raise more than 2xbb
-pocket 6s, limp, call no raise more than 2xbb
-pocket 7s, limp, call no raise more than 3xbb
-pocket 8s, limp, call no raise more than 3xbb
-pocket 9s, limp, call no raise more than 3xbb
-pocket 10s, raise 2xbb, call no raise more than 4xbb
-pocket Js, raise 3xbb, call no raise more than 10xbb, (all ins would make me hesitant here)
-pocket Qs, raise 4xbb, call all in preflop depending on the player that raised,
-pocket Ks, raise 4xbb, call all in preflop if pushed
-pocket As, raise 4xbb, call all in preflop if pushed

most of my pocket pairs i do not raise preflop on because if i dont hit my set the pp is basically garbage,

i am re-evaulating my pp technique due to the fact i just left tiger gaming where KK were basically folded because you were up against AA about 50% of the time,

any input is great

I will limp with any pocket pair in later position, in early position I'm hesitant to limp if the pots have been getting raised frequently preflop. I usually wouldn't call any raise with a pp lower than 10s, I will reraise with anything higher than JJ. Don't get overconfident with the small or middle pairs, remember you want to get into the pot as cheaply as possible for maximum implied odds.

On most flops, any set, even measly 22s will usually be a pretty dominating hand on the flop. I try not to have any set rules like that, because I don't think they can conver every situation, but its a start. One of the most powerful tools in NL Hold'em is calling with position with a small pair and flopping a set against an EP raiser.

First off, never do such small raises with mediocre hands. (min raise is the worst, obviously) Especially not with 10s. Could you more blatantly say: "I have a decent hand that's not that spectacular but is kinda sorta just don't reraise big or you'll push me off the hand kay thanks bye."

Secondly... Unless the board is 4 flushed or obvious broadway card to a straight, a set is often good. Even 2s. Stop worrying needlessly.

Thirdly, consider raising to the same amount with ALL pocket pairs. The insecurity of your opponent's read will become obvious to you quickly.

Fourtherly, consider lowering your calling standards preflop. I've seen math guidelines for this kind of stuff before, but personally I'm willing to call up to 6bb pre with any pp in NL in decent position. May change slightly based on who i'm playing with, but that's pretty much a safe bet.

I agree. You're grossly underestimating the power of a set. A set of any kind is a monster (unless the board is very coordinated). I can't imagine a situation where limping and folding to a min. raise is correct.

In NL call raises with them too as long as the raise isn't for too much. For example if some tighty raises from EP and you know for a fact he can only have AA or KK calling with 22 is correct as long as the raise wasn't for too much and you each are deep enough to give you implied odds. Sure you'll end up folding 88% of the time on the flop but the damage you do to him the 12% of the time you hit a set will easily make up for the 88% of the time you fold.

Sets are the one of the biggest money makers in small stakes NL hold'em.

these guys are speaking truths. sets are rare, powerful, and u are underestimating them.

MORE importantly, setting up systems of any kind in NLHE is a mistake. not only will u become easily read, u are negating the most important parts of the game, instinct, reads, and raising. a conservative system such as yours is useless in the long run, u gotta switch gears man. like someone said, its a good START to be analyzing the game such as you are, but now is time to start analyzing the advanced aspects.
