I put this is in basic, probably pretty basic for the limit players. :D

Fixed Limit 0.50/1. 10-handed. Table is moderately tight.

Only 100 hands or so on villain, vpip around the 20s. Nothing out of line on him. Only hand I've seen him raise from the BB was this one.

Hero is CO with A Spade 8 Club
Villain is BB

Folds, Hero raises, Button folds,SB folds,BB 3-bets,Hero calls

Flop: 5 Spade 4 Heart A Diamond

BB bets, Hero...?

Raise. You have to find out some information here. Villain could be making a continuation bet with KK or QQ or some high PP. You will not know where you stand in this one unless you raise right now.

If you raise and he calls, he likely will not have an Ace. If he comes over the top, then you can either fold it right there, or see the Turn cheap and fold to a bet there.

I agree with everything else you said but this. In short-handed games against moderately aggressive opponents, and from what I've seen of tame's play he probably qualifies, a smooth call followed by a lead or a check-raise on the turn with TPGK is often the best line.

I think he certainly needs to raise here, but don't assume a call means villain is weak.

*edit* I just saw the "10-handed" part of the original post. I think I like suited's line a little better. *edit*

This is terrible advice. You've got a pair of aces in HU in a blind battle. You should not consider folding. Raising isn't necessarily wrong, but raising for information is.

Unless your opponent is passive and predicatable the information you get from him on the flop is unreliable. Folding based on this unreliable information could be a terrible mistake. Even if a 3-bet surely means he has you dominated you have 3 outs and there is a good chance you can split the pot. Furthermore, raising, calling his 3-bet and folding UI on the turn won't be much cheaper than calling down.

There's also the value issue. If you raise he'll probably give up on a bluff and may even give up with a pocket pair. Both of these would be very bad for you. Most players realize that raising may give you a better idea about "where you're at". Unfortunately, it also gives your opponent a better idea as to where they're at. The information your opponent gains from your raise is far more benefitial to your opponent than the information you gain is benefiticial to you.

Cal the flop. Bet when checked to, call when bet into to. Calling bets on the flop turn and river won't make you a calling station.

Agreed - call it down.

Thanks for the replies guys. Call/raise was basically my dillemma, HU vs the BB with a pair of aces is a strong position to be in, and all I want is max value, I'm going to the river most of the time here.

The results of the hand doesn't really matter too much, it was the principle of it all that mattered and if I can gain more by calling in these situations. But for those interested.

BB bets, Hero raises, BB folds.
