I think with 7 people still at the table, it is a little early to be checking it down. With an overpair to the board, I want to defend my hand after the flop here.

I bet the flop, you probably have the best hand here and if you can't beat the original raiser's hand, the othery guy probably won't catch up either.

I’d be tempted to push pre-flop to try and isolate, although with a big stack already calling from an earlier position I’d be a bit scared. I’ve been reading Harrington Vol 2 recently and it seems to be making me a bit over aggressive, I need to remind myself to check the blinds and remember that I don’t need to make moves yet.

I’m not sure about the pre-flop call but on the flop I’m defiantly pushing. With no overcards and a 1545 pot.

I'm with Muck. Push preflop, or push the flop. I think that pushing preflop is the best course of action here, but given the flat call and that flop, shove, shove shove!

Edit: More specifically, "checking it down" to knock somebody out is often the way to go, but it tends to apply in situations where you benefit MORE from knocking somebody out, than winning the pot. With the pot containing that many chips, and your hand being good, but vulnerable, you have to be more concerned with putting those chips into YOUR hands, not just keeping them away from the shortie.

I am OK w/ the call preflop. The big stack has enough chips to make a loose call w/ 2 overcards (even crap like A10 KJ)-so I fear him a bit. But on that flop, I am ready to go broke with an overpair. I might bet 1/3 of my remaining chips or just move all in on the flop.

Definitely bet post-flop. Exactly what snoogins said; losing 1/7 of the field (which likely happens anyway) is less important than you getting those chips.
