Not really a bad beat, per se, but wasn't sure where else to post this and it got me pissed heh. Got myself totally dismantled and outplayed.... on pokerstars $10 sit-n-go.
Was in early position vs. the small blind, who had bumped it up (early on blinds 15-30) to 90 preflop, I call, no others. I'm holding AQo. Flop comes 8-Q-8 rainbow, he checks, I check. Turn brings a rag.. 3d I think, he makes minimum bet of 30 I raise it to 90, he calls. River hits another queen giving me Queens full of eights for my boat. I bet around 300, he raises allin - I put him on an 8 or higher pair - maybe slow playing Js or Ks? even Aces? I call (it put me allin) and the bastard turned over 88. Damn that hurt, flopped the quads and he just kilt me after I made my boat.
So my question is there any way I could have got off this hand, maybe bet bigger on the flop (instead of checking) and then if he comes over the top of me I'd know he had trips at least, maybe not quads but... did I slow play myself to death or was I just unlucky on that and get outplayed.

Quads are rare enough most people don't worry about them . . . and he checked off a free card . . . and you had a hell of a hand. . . I don't know how you could have detected it without him betting into you harder. I'm starting to understand that if someone calls they are either trying to hang in cheap or slow play . . . so that should have raised a flag, but that's a hard hand to lay down.

hah i was just on the other end of an almost identical hand. $5 18-player sit-n-go. short staked with 7 people left, i raise the min. blind to 300 from 150 from early position, 3 callers. I'm holding 77, flop comes 7-7-K wooooooooo! hehe. checked around, 2 check on the turn, 3rd bets 450 or so, I flat call, others fold. river drops a heart, giving him a flush, he bets 800 i go allin for another 300 more and he calls. least it was a bit of revenge for that other hand albeit against another player.

Did he check it on the river?

if you mean in the original hand he bet the min. on the river again which i raised, then he reraised setting me allin.

Id like to say that I would have been able to just call on the river, but that would be a lie. There is nothing that you could do. just a crappy flop for you.

I defy anybody to get away from that hand. If you bet on the flop he probably flat calls, enabling you to put him on a Q (maybe an 8). If he raises you, you maybe get away from the hand because you put him on the 8 at that point. I think very few people would have raised with the quads on the flop though.
Trouble is, unless he raised you, the only 2 hands you can put him on are the 8 or the Q - one of which you beat, the other you tie.

there's not really any way that you can anticipate quads, especially when he's not betting hard. it's not like you didn't have a hand, so all you can do is laugh it off.

The only way I can see you getting off of that hand is if you'd folded when he raised it to 90 preflop.
