Live Report Palms 3/15/2005 "Beware the Ides of March&q

If you get the title, then Kudos to you. You're an educated mo fo.

Yesterday was a semi disaster from the start. Another 2/4 Hold 'Em day at the Palms. Started playing at 1:15 pm. Left the room at 1:30 am. Twelve hours of poker. $150 loss. Bummer. It's amazing how much looser 2/4 live is than 2/4 online. You'll have "family pots" with everyone in it. It's kinda ridiculous. I started off great... right off the bat I was up about $50 with two flopped straights. Then, the bleeding started.

I went as far down as $200 in the hole. I think $220 at my worst. As the end of my session drew near, I was sitting with some semi-solid players and two fish. It's interesting to play good players at very low limits. Many hands get called, and sometimes they get raised with the silliest crap. So, I had to do it one myself.

There's a diamond flush promotion at the palms. Basically, if you hit a diamond flush, then you enter a drawing to win a $100. Either way, with a table of about seven players, and not having a hand if half an hour, I peeked at my hole cards... 7 2 of diamonds. This is a raising hand. Flop comes out J 7 2 rainbow. The good players folded to my raise. The two fish called. I bet on the flop, the fish on the left raised, the fish on the right called, and I reraised. (In retrospect, this could be a mistake as I could have one more money.) The original raiser folded, the caller called, then folded to my bet on the turn. Turns out the fish on my right had J A suited. Of course, I exposed my hand. So, they'll remember that play, and I think that they would think that I could have anything really on any hand. But, because this is low limit, it doesn't instill the fear to get them to fold.

So, come to the final hand of the evening, with about six players, and a kill pot (3/6), I call a raise from one of the strong players. I had the kill button and a queen 3 suited. Five other callers (putting about 30 bucks in the pot) and of course the flop comes out a q 3. He bet, I raise, he raises back, people fold, I call, and bet out. Something along the lines of a straight came out, and he commented about making his hand. I guess he was trying to get me to read the straight out there, especially when the 5 came on the turn. So, I bet on the turn and river, and he called. I show my two pair and he mucks, but I request to "see" his hole cards. (Hey, he did that to me earlier in the night too.) No straight for him... just a pair, and enought money in the pot to satisfy my for the night.

So, I really have to stop this low limit crap. At least stick to 4/8. Flush and straight draws really go up in value at these limis, but flopping them can be a byatch. Of course, you won't draw runner runner flush and straights, but they do it and win.... lol.

How about, "Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much; such men are dangerous <lines omited> Such men as he be never at heart's ease; Whiles they behold a greater than themselves,
And therefore are they very dangerous."

There's one really funny move that I forgot to tell you guys about. Sometimes in early position, just to joke around, I'll ask the dealer, "Are check raises allowed here?" Usually I'll do it to get a funny response from every one. So, I did it with bottom two pair that night, and the aggressive one bet out. Sure enough I raised and he reraised me. Suffice to say I won the pot!
