Without reads, I make the call. If he's got a king, you got outs. If hes got an 8 or 7, you got even more outs. If he's bluffing, you got a ton of outs. If you end up not improving, you are pretty much even in chips.
*hopes i made the right call*

I hate these types of hands because you just know he is playing Kx or KX. He has TP but your on an open ended straight draw with two cards to come. I would make the call and then drop to my knees to pay homage and pray to the poker gods to make sure my card fell.

You still have more chips than him if you call. So I call.

I kind of like checking the flop, to disguise my hand a little better.
Typically he will just bet an amount he is hoping that you call & you can look at your turn cheaper.
The downside is you don't have any chance of taking the hand down on the flop.

That's what it came down to. So I ended up calling, looking to gamble, and he turned up 98 (killing my 9... grrr). But, I hit my ten on the turn and finished off the tournament.
I can understand 1988 TR's point as well, and I considered this play, but my opponent was playing pretty passively, and I was stealing a lot of pots on the flop, so I figured I might as well try to win it there.

I see - Against a passive player, I don't miss many bets either. :D

I fold that flop pretty fast with no spades. One spade ... I fold. Two spades, I can't get it in fast enough. You have to know you're drawing to 8 outs on this one. I'm not getting it in here with a little less than 6:1 winning odds. The pot isn't offering you anywhere NEAR that.
Glad you hit, though.

So you've never bluffed in a heads up game? You've never pushed all-in with middle or top pair, a draw? All of these situations give him more outs than 8. He's got a minimum of 8.

Id fold this more often then not.

I think I would too but with those chip stacks, this would be a very close one to call.

He would need a great number of outs to call here, based on the pot odds. Villian raised preflop, then reraised a fairly tame board. The best situation he is looking at is two unpaired high cards. THEN i call. However, with how the hand went, you see either Kx or a pair higher than 8s wayyyyyy too often.

He's getting 2.6:1 to call here. 8 clean outs gives him 2.9:1 to make a straight by the turn. Counting the 9 as an out gives him 2.1:1. You see, the pot odds are not so bad after all. Getting 2.6:1 on a 3:1 dog to win the tournament is not soo bad. However, factor in that he will still have more chips than the villain if he calls and loses makes this one a clear call. Blinds are high, make a move, here it is.

Breaking it down is good stuff.
And if you win you get to say 'SHIP IT!'
(I mean, that is two outs worth of fun right there. )
