U.S. Law proposed to ban wagers online

Thought this category might be a nice little addition to the forum...

It's the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act". Congress wants to force your credit card company to spy on each of your purchases to make sure you're not trying to gamble on the Internet. How's that make you feel?
There's a nice article at http://www.profreedom.com/information/ that sums it up. If you want to take some action, you can on that same site on their front page at http://www.profreedom.com if, like me, you don't like violations of your privacy or bans on internet gambling.

Well, take a look at http://dc.internet.com/news/article.php/2216461

Looks like the proponents of the bill goofed a little bit.

Hi all,

I have just started playing poker online (so far only play tables) and really enjoy it. However, in the state where I live gambling is illegal. So can anyone tell me if this means that the gambling house is illegal to have in-state or does this mean that it is illegal for me to sit in my house and gamble on-line?

If I were to somehow win a tournament, could this potentially get me in trouble?

thx

Looks like that bill moved a bit closer...
On July 31st, the Senate Banking Committee approved the Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act (S. 627) without any debate at all. It's off to the Senate now. Here's the arguments that get me...
First off, they say that online casinos deal with organized crime. Ever been to a place called Las Vegas? That place was practically founded by organized crime, and I'm sure it still has a presence. Unless crime moved to Antigua, or Beliz, or anyplace else that online casino servers are located...
Second, they say that online casinos promote and give minors access to gambling. I'm sure there are kids out there that could do it. They'd have to find a valid, active credit card on the road, then create a Neteller account by producing an age-verified SSN and make it through the phone screening. Easy enough. Then they'd just have to make it through the casino's online screening process. They'll find a way. We know that all children are degenerate gamblers! They stop at nothing to gamble online! Children in the U.S. are too smart for your S. 627, they'll find another way! Smile
Senator: "What arguments can we use to get the people behind us on this bill?"
Lobbyist: "Well, um...tell them they target kids! It worked against Big Tobacco!"
Next, they always site the "addictive nature of Web gambling". Did the internet make another vice too convenient? How about porn sites? How about websites that promote discrimination then ask for donations? Buy a gun on the web no questions asked? They accept financial transactions for something the Christian White House considers bad too. Well, maybe not all discrimination... or the gun thing...
Shouldn't we just ban gambling, then? Or ban addiction?
And the kicker...online gambling promotes terrorism!
Senator: "What other arguments can we use?"
Lobbyist: "Well, naturally if you want a bill to pass, use terrorism. How do you think we got that Patriot Act in there?"
Working in this industry, I realize that a lot of the money comes straight back into this country. We probably take money from people in other countries in the process (believe it or not!). It goes to pay marketing companies, affiliate programs, banking institutions, legal firms, and even individuals invested in these companies...all located right here.
I'm pretty sure Osama doesn't have a computer...
Or internet access...
Or a clue how to run an online casino...

Okay, sorry about the rant...just had to vent a little.

Wow, this is really unfair. I am a little too young to play poker, anywhere for real money but I live in an area where you really can not find any real, face-to-face poker. My only possible chance to play for real money consistently would be on the internet. I haven't read everything you guys have posted but please tell me real quick. Why is it SO much worse to gamble online than in a casino? I do not get it.

because the states dont make moeny on it... is the basic reason why...

all in the facade of saving the children, because when people hear poker they hear gambling, they hear gambling they hear all the bad things associated with gambling...

of course nobody ever says the lottery and bingo are forms of gambling...
