Does anyone know when it bacame legal in California to have poker rooms? I've searched, but can't seem to come up with the right answer.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

I'm almost positive that Lee Jones, in his small stakes hold 'em book, makes a reference to some sort of poker becoming legal in California event in 1987 or 88. I don't know if this confllicts with MJJ's link, he doesn't go into details about what it was, just mentioning there was a boom in players at that time, and a lot of pros came here to clean up. I'll try to find the reference when I get home.

How about this:
CA BPC 19801(c)(2)
(2) The State of California has permitted the operation of
gambling establishments for more than one hundred years. Gambling
establishments were first regulated by the State of California
pursuant to legislation which was enacted in 1984.

From what my brother-in-law told me...back in the late/mid 80's poker was legal in a lot of places...especially bars...but you had to play lowest card wins...he called it low ball...kind of like omaha without the high set...weird...maybe I am wrong but I know he had talked about it before this question was posted. It wasn't no-limit..$1/$2 limit...no tournaments...

I seem to recall reading things about this: certain forms of poker not being legal, certain weird limits to the maximum bet that can be placed, etc. Something about Gardena, and lowball. That's about the most I can dig out of my mind at the moment.
